One thing our editorial team shares in common: we’re obsessed with morning routines (hence our dedicated Wake Up Call series.) A morning ritual is grounding, helping to center yourself before the busyness of the day ahead. But a nighttime routine can be harder to curate, as this is the part of your day when you’re likely the least energetic—and therefore unlikely to commit to a 12-step skincare ritual. Because really, when all you want to do is go to bed, is it worth it to layer on your overnight skincare products?

Turns out, the answer is yes. We all know that sleeping in your makeup is the biggest skincare faux pas, but some nights, you can barely manage more than a makeup wipe. Well… you might be sabotaging your skin more than you think. Your overnight skincare products take advantage of your skin’s prime repair hours, concentrating their effectiveness. By curating an effective nighttime routine—which can be as short or long as you need—you can supercharge your skincare. And create a ritual you’ll be just as excited for as your morning matcha.

How do overnight skincare products work?

Everyone loves talking about biohacking—the current wellness trend du jour. From cold plunges to cycle syncing, optimizing your health is no longer just for billionaires or bros. I’ve started thinking of my nighttime skincare routine as beauty biohacking. By aligning your overnight skincare products with your goals, you can take advantage of your skin’s nighttime healing process.

For further insights into the topic, I spoke with Agatha Relota Luczo, founder & CEO of Furtuna Skin. Ahead, we discuss how overnight skincare products work and how to make the most of your beauty sleep.

“A comprehensive nighttime routine is just as important as a daytime skincare routine,” says Luczo. “You need both to achieve every type of skincare goal, whether that’s preventing breakouts, slowing down the aging process, or achieving a healthy glow.”

Keep reading for Luczo’s expert insights into using overnight skincare products to wake up with your best-ever skin.

Overnight Versus Morning Skincare

Just like our bodies, our skin has its own 24-hour biological clock ruled by the earth’s day and night cycles called the skin circadian rhythm. The skin’s circadian rhythm regulates dermal functions, so it’s important that your daytime and nighttime skincare is in sync with these functions. If not, the skin’s biological clock is disrupted, causing dehydration, breakouts, diminished radiance, and more pronounced dark spots, lines, wrinkles, and sagging.

What should a nighttime skincare routine consist of?

During the day, our skin enters “protect mode.” As the skin fights environmental stressors like sun radiation and air pollution, it thickens to prevent moisture loss and elevates its acid mantle, protecting it from bacteria and inflammation. In the morning, you want to apply antioxidants like vitamin C and niacinamide to boost the skin’s defenses.

At night, when our skin is in “repair mode,” it naturally increases cell turnover to rid itself of toxins. This decreases the layer of natural oils and causes moisture loss, so look for products made with ingredients to help stimulate turnover and replenish moisture.

How to Perfect Your Overnight Skincare Routine

1. Start With a Clean Slate

In terms of where to start, focus on cleansing the skin and getting rid of all impurities without depleting the skin of its natural oils. For this step, I love a cleansing balm, which is an oil-based cleanser that has more of a solid consistency that breaks down makeup but also helps with cleaning away dirt, sunscreen, and other products from the day.

Furtuna Skin Cleansing Oil Balm

“Our Cleansing Oil Balm provides a comforting double cleanse in one wash: olive oil dissolves makeup, sunscreen, and debris, while olive leaf water provides a second level of cleansing by rinsing away water-soluble particles, such as dirt, dead skin, and pollution. It also contains olive squalane—a nutrient-rich emollient oil that helps boost hydration, seal moisture, and alleviate dryness to leave the complexion glowing and rejuvenated with no greasy finish.” — Agatha Relota Luczo

Dew Dream Hydrating Cleansing Balm

This gel-to-oil cleanser contains nourishing ingredients to feed your skin as it cleans debris.

Overnight Skincare Products for Uneven Texture and Hyperpigmentation

To tackle texture and pigmentation, I love using an exfoliator at night. Historically, we as consumers have had to choose between chemical or physical exfoliants when what’s really needed is a multifaceted product that targets the skin’s complex layers. I love how it lets my moisturizer absorb better, so I can truly reap the benefits of the powerful active ingredients while my skin is repairing itself at night.

Indie Lee AHA Exfoliating Solution

This blend of exfoliants includes lactic acid, glycolic acid, and prickly pear to sweep off dead skin cells overnight.

Mara Plankton + PHA™ Flower Acid Algae Serum

This 3-in-1 resurfacing serum uses lactic acid, three bioactive flower acids, and PHAs to brighten and stimulate cell renewal overnight.

Mandelic Clearing Serum

This gentle mandelic acid serum helps treat everything from pigmentation to active acne while nourishing your skin with hyaluronic acid.

Overnight Skincare Products for Fine Lines

To help with turnover and improve fine lines and texture, I turn to bakuchiol, also known as nature’s retinol. Bakuchiol is generally more tolerable than retinol or tretinoin, so you are less likely to experience side effects like redness or flaking.

0.3% Retinol + 2% Bakuchiol Treatment

This unique serum combines bakuchiol and retinol to strengthen skin without increasing irritation.

iS Clinical Retinol + Emulsion .03

Retinol is combined with botanical ingredients like antioxidant-rich vitamin C to smooth and brighten while protecting against free radicals.

Shani Darden Retinol Reform

From celebrity esthetician Shani Darden, this serum combines retinol with lactic acid to smooth fine lines.

Overnight Skincare Products for Dry Skin

Whenever I’m feeling particularly dry, I apply an occlusive balm as the final step in my skincare routine at night, especially during the winter or after a long day in the sun. It creates a cocoon-like environment for the skin to repair itself by preventing water loss.

Furtuna Skin Replenishing Balm

“Our Replenishing Balm gently envelops the skin in a protective, occlusive layer of sound bath-infused extra-virgin olive oil and a unique combination of medicinal herbs that have been used for centuries to heal and rejuvenate suffering or prematurely aging skin.” — Agatha Relota Luczo

COSRX Ultimate Nourishing Rice Overnight Spa Mask

This lightweight mask can be used as a moisturizer or overnight sleeping mask. Rice extract moisturizes while niacinamide brightens and arginine stimulates collagen production.

PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Overnight Mask

Slug your skin with hyaluronic acid for overnight hydration without clogging your pores.

More Overnight Skin-Boosting Products

I’m a huge fan of facial massage. It helps release the day’s tension in my facial muscles and assists in the lymphatic draining process. Over time, facial massage can help rebuild the elastin and collagen in our connective tissue. Increasing blood flow, especially when I can’t get in a workout, is a daily priority for me.

I alternate between using our Gua Sha and Jillian Dempsey’s gold-plated vibrating bar. I also recommend using a Canopy humidifier in the bedroom overnight in dry weather to decrease the amount of transepidermal water loss.

Furtuna Skin Gua Sha

Craving a natural contour? Gua shas promote blood flow, lymphatic drainage, and mindfulness while sculpting your face.

Jilian Dempsey Gold Bar

This 24K gold vibrating bar promotes facial toning and natural contouring through intense facial massage.

Bedside Humidifier

A humidifier isn’t just for when you’re sick. This aesthetically pleasing humidifier keeps your skin dewy and glowing.

Why are we so drawn to the idea of a detox? From digital detoxes to Dry January, there’s just something so compelling about a clean slate. There’s a mindset component that reminds you that you can do hard things and trains your discipline muscle. There are also the material rewards: a faster computer after a digital detox, a replenished savings account after a “no-spend” challenge, or the promise of a clearer complexion when you do a skin detox.

But “detox” has become a buzzword in the wellness community. These days, I’m skeptical when I hear about the powers of the latest trendy cleanse. While some big changes can yield big results—like quitting caffeine or going grain-free—I’ve found the most sustainable change comes by sticking with the basics. But after the holidays, when I’ve neglected my routines and my skin is paying for it, I inevitably begin a skin reset.

Featured image from our interview with Megan O’Neill by Belathée Photography.

What is a skin detox?

A skin detox is an attempt to purge the toxins from your skin by changing your diet or switching up your skincare products. There are some short-term solutions to purge the toxins from your skin, like sweating them out in a sauna or getting a detox facial treatment. But for a more effective, long-term skin detox, the answers are found in your gut or skincare routine.

When you detox your skin through food, you go back to basics. We know that what we eat affects our gut health, but do you know the connection between gut health and skin? It explains why you break out after indulging in sugar and why your face is puffy after too much salt. Food allergies, poor diet, and a lack of good gut bacteria can show up on your face. So, doing a skin detox often goes hand in hand with a food detox.

The Power of a Skincare Reset

The other option is a skincare reset. If food isn’t contributing to a duller complexion, it might be external toxins like pollutants, harsh chemicals, substances (like alcohol or smoking), or even using the wrong skincare for your skin type.

With the right products and tools, you can indulge in a professional-level detox to give your skin a clean slate. But don’t go rushing to buy pore strips and abrasive scrubs. A detox shouldn’t be a quick fix. Instead, it should help you clear away dead skin cells, sebum, and clogged pores—while also detoxing your skin long-term.

To unravel toxic detox myths from the facts, I spoke with Kylie Bensley, MS, RD and clinical dietician at Sulinu Nutrition and Athena Hewett, celebrity esthetician and founder of the clean beauty brand Monastery. Ahead, our experts uncover the truth: can you really detox your skin?

Would you recommend a skin detox?

Insights shared by Kylie Bensley, MS, RD

I regularly do them and recommend them. As we are exposed to more pollutants every day, a detox is a way to ‘reset’ our bodies, lower our toxin threshold, and become more mindful of our surrounding pollutants. The detox should not feel like you are depriving yourself, starving yourself, or feeling unhealthy in any way.

I highly recommend making it a holistic experience: Drinking hibiscus tea while detoxing in a dry sauna, deep breathing while giving yourself a lymphatic massage, and supplementing your drinks with psyllium husk to cleanse the colon.

Skin Detox Foods

Foods that are good for detoxing skin have the ability to bind to toxins and remove them from the body. Also look for glutathione producers. Glutathione is a nutrient that binds to mycotoxin—a toxin that wreaks havoc on the skin—and carries it out of the body.

By eating foods that support more glutathione production, we improve toxin removal in our skin. Foods that do this are:

 • Broccoli
 • Bell Peppers
 • Cauliflower
 • Beets
 • Cranberries
 • Garlic
 • Kale
 • Arugula
 • Radishes
 • Cranberries

Each food has a function. Look for foods rich in zinc, copper, and manganese—the three cofactors for collagen production, such as, Brazil nuts, pistachios, bone broth, and pumpkin seeds.

The Best Beverages to Detox Your Skin

Hibiscus tea. This tea is used in Ayurvedic medicine due to its cooling effect on the skin and its ability to decrease skin pollutants. The brews are rich in an antioxidant called myricetin that can help reduce collagen breakdown.

Chlorophyll drinks. Chlorophyll powdered drinks have been shown to prevent the accumulation of the persistent organic pollutant dioxin.

Cranberry juice. Cranberry juice works to cleanse the lymphatic system, which neutralizes waste products from the body’s tissues. (Try adding a sleepy girl mocktail in your nighttime routine!)

Green tea. Green tea contains polyphenols that are associated with reduced inflammation and lowered sebum production.

Nourish bowl recipe for skin detox.

What ingredients in food cause acne?

In general, factory-farmed dairy, sugar, and gluten are the major culprits of acne. Some estimates say that 75% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant. If you have any acne problems, the first step is to switch to dairy-free versions of products.

Sugar is now found in nearly all foods. Essentially, if the ingredient ends in “-ose” on the label, it is sugar. Sugar has the ability to cause insulin surges, increasing the risk of acne. Safer sugars are stevia, raw honey, or maple syrup.

Gluten can be another trigger. Instead of eating “gluten-free” foods with fillers, eat a diet that is naturally gluten-free. I recommend getting your carbs from gluten-free sources that also promote blood sugar balance, such as sweet potatoes, quinoa, and lentils.

You can also do some type of food sensitivity or food intolerance testing, as acne-causing ingredients are individualized. A food sensitivity test will give you the best sources for causing acne.

How long does it take to detox skin?

It depends upon the toxic load you are carrying. Some people notice a difference in six weeks while others take several years because the toxic load is so built up in the liver and the body is working hard to excrete it.

Skincare.

Can you detox your skin with products?

While a lifestyle shift can transform your skin from the inside out, a little help from the right products goes a long way. By doing a skin detox, you can cleanse the dirt and impurities from your skin for a glowing complexion. Whether you experience sensitive skin issues like psoriasis or eczema or you have oily skin prone to breakouts, a skin detox can help prevent irritation and flood your skin with nutrients.

But a detox is a detox. It often means forgoing makeup and abrasive products in favor of double cleansing and increased water intake. It also means engaging in skin-healthy habits like cleaning your makeup brushes and auditing your products for expired makeup. The detoxification process is not just clay masks and moisturizers.

“It can sound very daunting but don’t be afraid of it,” says Athena. “The rewards will be worth it. The next time you don’t have to wear makeup or sunblock for the next few days give it a try!”

Best Skincare Products to Support a Detox

Insights shared by Athena Hewett, esthetician

Often products that we use on our skin put it in reactive mode when it needs a chance to just be. For a skin detox, try something very mild that won’t tamper with the top layer of the skin (your microbiome or skin barrier). You need your natural good bacteria and oils to flourish. They are there to help fight off the bad bacteria, and if you remove the good bacteria, problems arise.

It can be as little as three days to a week [to detox your skin through skincare products]. But many years ago, when I was struggling with stage 3 acne, I did a detox for six weeks and it completely cleared my skin. I formulated the Rose Cleansing Oil at this time because I needed something that would only sit atop the skin—something that wouldn’t strip or change my skin at all. For the record, I’ve never broken out ever again.

How often should you detox your skin?

It just really depends. If you are using actives or brands that may have ingredients that are not the cleanest, then probably at least every few months.

Step 1: Cleanser

Double cleansing can remove impurities from your skin and clear excess sebum. Make sure to choose a cleanser that detoxes without stripping your skin of good oils or disrupting your microbiome.

Step 2: Gentle Exfoliation

Out: harsh, skin-stripping products. In: gentle chemical exfoliants that clear away dead skin cells without harming your microbiome.

Step 3: Detox Serum

Don’t overload your skin with too many serums. For a skin detox, look for pore-clearing ingredients like niacinamide and non-comedogenic hydrators like hyaluronic acid.

Step 4: Lightweight Moisturizer

Your moisturizer might be sabotaging your skin goals. We get it—in the colder months, we want to cocoon our skin with creams upon creams. Pare down to one lightweight moisturizer that clears your pores instead of clogging them.

Step 5: Detoxifying Mask

A mask can be your secret weapon in a skin reset. While some clay masks rupture your moisture barrier and irritate your skin, these masks refresh and reset your complexion.

Life is a game of “Would You Rather?”—from big decisions to small, everything has a potential reward or consequence. Would you rather stay home or move to a new city? Would you rather spend the money or save it? Would you rather have one more glass or… what? Sometimes, the decisions that seem insignificant can have a bigger effect than we anticipated. Embarking on a monthlong journey of sobriety is certainly one of those. For anyone dipping their toe into Dry January, it can feel like you’re venturing into the unknown. Whether you’re doing it as a detox or in pursuit of a more permanent lifestyle change, cutting back might come with some surprises. Especially the effects of alcohol on skin.

Alcohol impacts everything from coordination to judgment and sleep. And while there can be plenty of reasons to hit pause, you might be more motivated to swap out that glass of Pinot for something zero-proof once you get a better idea of alcohol’s effects on your skin.

The Effects of Alcohol on Skin

For many, healthy, glowing skin is an unintended consequence of a dive into sober curiosity. I’m all about this accidental intersection of synergy and satisfaction—the things we find along the journey that remind us why we started it. Most of us know that less imbibing can come with plenty of physical and mental benefits, including improved cognitive function and hormone health, better sleep, mood stability, and balanced blood sugar. It’s invigorating to discover yet another potential benefit of the experiment: a healthier, lit-from-within complexion.

Maybe it’s because I’m motivated by near-instant gratification, but I like seeing results as much as I love feeling them. To learn more about the effects of alcohol on our skin, I reached out to Nutrition Consultant Edie Horstman for answers and insights.

Edie Horstman
Edie Horstman

Edie is the founder of nutrition coaching business, Wellness with Edie. With her background and expertise, she specializes in women’s health, including fertility, hormone balance, and postpartum wellness.

It All Starts in the Gut

Alcohol affects our gut health, which, in turn, affects our skin. It disrupts our gut microbiota balance, leading to an overgrowth of not-so-good bacteria and a reduction in beneficial bacteria. This imbalance can contribute to inflammation and various digestive issues.

Alcohol is dehydrating, causing dry, flaky skin and a dull complexion. It also dilates blood vessels, potentially causing redness in the cheeks, chest, and neck. Chronic alcohol consumption may contribute to inflammation, exacerbating skin conditions like rosacea and acne.

There’s also research that shows alcohol can interfere with collagen production, accelerating the aging process and promoting the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How Drinking Less Can Benefit the Skin

Conversely, because so many of our internal systems work in tandem, it makes sense that the residual benefits of cutting back on alcohol would promote a healthy glow. Horstman cites the following as skin benefits you can expect from drinking less:

 • Improved skin hydration
 • Decreased inflammation
 • Reduced redness
 • Fewer fine lines

Plus, drinking less leads to better sleep quality, which further promotes overall skin health and a more radiant complexion.

If you’re sober curious, these are some of our favorite non-alcoholic drinks to stock up on. (Consult our full list of editor-approved, zero-proof drinks.)

Nutritionist-Approved Tips to Support Your Skin If You Choose to Drink

Though we’re beginning to better understand the negative impacts of alcohol on our health, it’s still present in our world today. Horstman lists the following as key things to keep in mind to promote skin health.

 • Stay hydrated. Drinking water and electrolytes between drinks isn’t just good for preventing hangovers. It helps keep your skin hydrated and dewy as well.
 • Moderation is key. Moderate alcohol consumption is generally defined as one drink per day for women, but consuming even fewer drinks is better.
 • Choose clear spirits (vodka or gin). These have fewer congeners, which are fermentation byproducts that can contribute to skin irritation. Mix with unsweetened sparkling water and citrus instead of sugary mixers.
 • Nibble on antioxidant-rich foods. Think berries, veggies, and ginger to help combat oxidative stress and inflammation.
 • Keep skin protected. MOISTURIZE and wear sunscreen!

Our Favorite Skincare Products to Combat the Effects of Alcohol

Blue Lagoon Silica Mud Mask

Made of silica from Iceland’s famous blue lagoons, this white clay mask gently draws out impurities. It also helps balance and refresh your skin for an instantly glowing complexion.

Superegg Vitamin Collective Vitality Elixir

Because alcohol is known to dull and dehydrate, we love leaning on this brightening serum that saturates the skin with antioxidants to protect against free radicals.

La Roche-Posay Double Repair Face Moisturizer

In wine and skincare, the French know best. This cult-favorite moisturizer nourishes dry skin with soothing niacinamide, glycerin (known to naturally attract water to the skin), and skin barrier-strengthening Ceramide-3. We apply to the face and neck for fast-absorbing protection.

Kinship Self Reflect Sunscreen SPF 32

We love the glowy finish this moisturizing SPF leaves on the skin (with zero white cast, of course). Turmeric provides an antioxidant boost, keeping blemish-prone skin clear and protected.

Trends are a reflection of our time, but they can also signal a fresh start—especially when it comes to the beauty industry. In honor of a welcome New Year ahead, we tapped a stable of beauty world heavy-hitters to help us sift through fleeting fads and pinpoint their best bets for 2024 beauty trend predictions.

While compiling the following beauty trends, we noticed that most fell into the skincare realm (a reaction to a consumer shift toward serums and moisturizers over makeup), and often speak to the sophistication of today’s buyer. The market may feel saturated, but skincare lovers are more educated than ever. They’re seeking out what actually works for them and are understanding the science as to why.

It’s an exciting, innovative time in the beauty world. The following 2024 beauty trend predictions feel like a hopeful response to that fact.

Featured image from our interview with Mary Ralph.

Quiet Luxury, The Beauty Edition

“The rise of ‘quiet luxury’ we saw come to the forefront of consumer consciousness in early fall ’23 is here to stay. A term initially coined for fashion—timeless, understated pieces that look expensive due to their high-quality materials—will influence the beauty industry as consumers seek effective, high-quality products that are both sophisticated and simple. (This doesn’t mean a steep price tag!)” — Monique Meneses, a 15-year former beauty brand consultant and founder of IOTA

Violette_FR Invisible Bandage

“I am obsessed with this skincare innovation that goes on like a clear topcoat to soothe, protect and prime blemishes, minor cuts, and burns,” Meneses shares. “The chic brush applicator dispenses the perfect amount!”

“I’m swapping rich, saturated lipstick for these super-hyrating, sheer-but-buildable shades that melt onto lips for a rich, glossy finish,” says Meneses.

Functional Fragrances

“In 2024 I’m pretty sure we’ll continue to see the rise of the functional fragrance movement as the next big perfume trend—where fragrance isn’t just about smelling good but is scientifically designed to be a powerful catalyst for mental well-being. I think we’ll see more scents that help with stress reduction and mood enhancement, ushering in a new era where fragrance not only awakens the senses but also contributes to a balanced mind and body.” Rosie Johnston, Founder/CEO of By/Rosie Jane

Regenerative Aesthetics

“People are looking for a much more “natural” look now, particularly the younger generation. They are less interested in that “high cheek contour” and “extra full” lips—prejuvenation is much more popular. The trend is moving to less filters and less makeup, with more focus on skincare and anti-aging.” — SkinSpirit Physician’s Assistant Kristin Polega

Polega does recommend dermal fillers for that rejuvenated look, but not just any kind.

“I love Sculptra Aesthetic because we remove the “shock factor” that some people feel with filler. It provides a gradual build-up over time, so the results are subtle yet impressive when comparing photos.”

Scalp Care is Here to Stay

“Throughout 2023 we saw a comparison drawn between scalp care and skincare. As many companies move into the space and capitalize on the trend, our job as stylists is to further learn and educate clients about what we think are the most effective solutions available.” — Jay Small, Celebrity Hairstylist and Co-Founder of Arey

Regardless of hair texture, density, or style preference, Small recommends two things when treating the scalp at home.

 • Ditch the added fragrance in scalp serums. “Scent is more for the experience and less about the health of your scalp,” Small explains. “I would also look for a water-based formula that is free of oil—preferably one that is backed by research and science.”
 • Look for gentle products. “Scalp scrub doesn’t have to literally scrub your scalp!” Small adds. “The most common causes of buildup on the scalp are oil and dead skin cells. Using a product that is less abrasive and contains ingredients that target that build up is key.”

AREY Scrub Scalp Exfoliant

“When formulating Scrub, we wanted to focus on the most effective ingredients to cleanse the scalp, so we chose salicylic, glycolic and lactic acid, which gently remove buildup and won’t irritate the scalp,” says Arey founder Jay Small.

Nude nails 2024 beauty trend predictions.

The Skincare-ification of Nails

“2023 was a big, bling-filled nail year where studded talons and metallics prevailed, but I predict that 2024 nail trends will be dialed down with more of an emphasis on flaunting the underlying healthy nail, à la the no-makeup-makeup looks that have prevailed.” — Dr. Dana Stern, Board-Certified Dermatologist and Founder of Dr. Dana

For reference, Dr. Stern nods to fashion: “Helmut Lang’s spring/summer show models wore sans-serif typeface nails, which have a minimalist tattoo-like vibe. Jin Soon created a similarly chic, understated yet edgy look for Jason Wu’s show where black dots and lines were used over a clear base, again flaunting the underlying healthy, well-cared-for nail. Also, Holly Falcone created a clean, but playful and somewhat fanciful look for Sandy Liang’s 2024 runway show where nails were painted with an almost translucent pearly base and accented with satin bows and delicate gems, again flaunting the underlying clean, healthy nail.”

Sami Bernstein Spalter

The Rise of the Trichologist

“A trichologist is a professional that studies the hair and scalp. Often we don’t know who to turn to for matters of scalp health—is it our dermatologist or our hairstylist? A trichologist bridges the gap between both, helping to diagnose and advise on everything from dandruff, hair loss, damaged hair strands, and overexposure to chemicals or styling. More and more I am speaking with hairstylists that are getting certified in trichology.” Jay Small, Celebrity Hairstylist and Co-Founder of Arey

Less Sameness on the Shelves

“Given the oversaturation in the market and overflowing shelves, as well as economic pressures across the board, I believe customers will invest in brands that are truly innovating with a clear point of difference that goes beyond trendy marketing. The last few years have seen a lot of ‘sameness’ on the shelves and I think we’ll start to see that fizzle in the spirit of focus and customer-led innovation.” — Stephanie DiPisa, CEO + Founder of Solara Suncare

Wellness 2.0

“The mind-skin-gut connection will inspire more brands to highlight how comprehensive well-being and physical appearance are interconnected as the lines between wellness and beauty become even more blurred.” — Monique Meneses, a 15-year former beauty brand consultant and founder of IOTA

Vyrao Witchy Woo Eau de Parfum

“I love what founder Yasmin Sewell is doing with the first healing perfume brand, Vyrao,” says Meneses. “Each aroma is specifically blended to encourage positive feelings for the wearer and even better, each is powered by a Herkimer crystal, known for its healing properties, which is charged by energy worker Louise Mita in Hawaii.”

IOTA Supermatcha Body Lotion+

“It’s like the healthiest matcha mousse dessert for skin with 16 vitamins and minerals from superfoods like matcha, rambutan, snow mushroom, caffeine, and face-grade actives like niacinamide,” notes Meneses. “It helps firm your body but also benefits your overall health.”

Skincare products.

Science-Backed Ingredients

“I think consumers will be moving past some of the latest social media-driven ingredients or marketing trends in a return to craving more science-backed, high-performing ingredients. Brands that take that seriously and remain transparent and focused in their expertise will continue to thrive.” — Stephanie DiPisa, CEO + Founder of Solara Suncare

I’ll be honest. It wasn’t until I started double cleansing that I even thought about what kind of face wash I was using, let alone its ingredients. But the first—and one of the most important—steps of your skincare routine can transform your complexion. If it’s clear, glowy skin you’re after, the best exfoliating face washes can get the job done.

That being said, digging into exfoliating cleansers can be a little more complicated than other product categories. There are two types: chemical and physical, the latter of which can cause a bit of debate (more on that in a minute). It’s also important to find a rhythm with exfoliating face washes—they’re not typically an every night kind of thing.

But once you find the right brand fit and frequency, a great exfoliating face wash will become a glow-inducing, acne-fighting staple of your skincare routine. Trust us. For guidance, we tapped three skincare experts: board-certified dermatologist Dr. Elizabeth Geddes-Bruce; Olivia Quido, founder of O Skincare; and Laura Acre, director of R&D at Thrive Natural Care.

How often should we use an exfoliating face wash?

Even the most gentle exfoliating face wash is still hard working. “For most people, two to three times a week is enough, but you can exfoliate more often if your skin tolerates it well,” says Acre.

Ingredients to Look For

Plenty of brands make a great exfoliating face wash (it wasn’t hard to gather the products below), but knowing what you’re looking for can help you find the best fit for you.

“A good exfoliating wash usually has a single or combination of alpha or beta hydroxy acids and enzymes,” shares Geddes.

 • Salicylic Acid (in stronger exfoliators)
 • Glycolic Acid (in stronger exfoliators)
 • Lactic Acids (in more gentle exfoliators)
 • Mandelic Acid (in more gentle exfoliators)
 • Milk (a mild exfoliator)
 • Soothing/Hydrating ingredients like aloe vera, cucumber, lilac stem cell, and green tea
Sanetra Longno

Is it okay to use physical exfoliators?

It’s a heated debate. While chemical exfoliators are known for gently dissolving dead skin cells, physical exfoliants mechanically get the job done with ingredients like microbeads, salts, or rice grains. But is the latter category too abrasive? It depends on who you ask.

“Avoid ingredients like fruit pits or seeds and shells as they can damage the skin with microtears,” shares Acre, who positions herself firmly with the no-physical-exfoliators team.

Dr. Geddes is far more pro, sharing that, “I think physical exfoliators get unfairly knocked. In truth, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that apricot scrub we all tried in our teen years. The problems occurred when people were using it too frequently in an effort to wash away acne. That just doesn’t work.”

Quido sees benefits on both sides but does point out an edge for chemical products. “Chemical exfoliation is most useful for improving skin tone and reducing dullness, and has long-term effects and benefits,” Quido explains. “Unlike physical exfoliation, which only stays on the epidermis layer of the skin, chemical exfoliation gently resurfaces the skin for a smoother, brighter, and more even appearance.”

The Best Exfoliating Face Washes

Armed with recommendations from our experts, tried-and-true test runs, and thorough sleuthing in the “Skincare Addiction” Reddit (a fount of wisdom if there ever was one), we feel confident recommending the following face washes (both physical and chemical) to keep dull skin at bay and provide an even, radiant glow.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Best Overall: Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant Exfoliator

Skincare Reddit is obsessed, as are several of our experts. With a little water, the slightly gritty, rice-based powder transforms into a foamy, enzyme-packed paste to become a two-in-one hero: a physical scrub and a gentle chemical exfoliator

Best Chemical Exfoliating Face Wash: Revision Skincare Papaya Enzyme Cleanser

This creamy cleanser is a Dr. Geddes-Bruce favorite that’s gentle enough for all skin types and easy to add to any skin care regimen, including those with potentially irritating ingredients like retinoids and vitamin C.

Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser

All the nostalgia of the apricot scrub from your teenage years without the crushed shell shards, this all-natural formula uses a mix of chemical (BHAs) and physical (apricot microspheres) to clean and buff out clogged pores.

Best Affordable: Versed The Purist Antioxidant Face Cleanser

This is a favorite of Camille Styles Managing Editor, Isabelle. She uses it twice weekly for an all-over glow and loves that it clears out impurities without stripping the skin. The cleanser yields a soft and hydrated result—while maintaining its seal of sensitive skin approval.

Best Exfoliating Face Washes: Honorable Mentions

Ogee Botanical Brilliance Exfoliating Cleanser

Especially good for breakouts and acne-prone skin, Ogee’s formula gently exfoliates while absorbing excess oil for a balanced, beautiful complexion.

AmorePacific Treatment Enzyme Exfoliating Powder Cleanser

This potent, powdery blend is strong enough to be a treatment on its own (a super gentle one!). But when it’s mixed with water, it becomes an exfoliating cream that dissolves as you cleanse your face. It’s perfect for sensitive skin and—because it’s waterless—an excellent travel companion.

Philosophy Microdelivery Exfoliating Facial Wash

If you absolutely must scrub, Philosophy’s practically microscopic beads are satisfying and gentle.

COSMEDIX Clarify Salicylic Acid Foaming Cleanser

Don’t let the words foaming and salicylic acid turn you off. This alcohol- and sulfate-free formula is not the stripping, drying foaming cleansers of your past. It also has soothing aloe and probiotics to encourage healthy bacteria on the skin.

Summer Fridays Soft Reset AHA Exfoliating Solution

The potent blend of niacinamide and 16% AHAs gently sloughs off dead skin cells for a brighter, clearer complexion. Some reviewers noted how strong the product is (tingling is apparently normal), so absolutely do a patch test first if your skin is sensitive.

Dealing With Dry, Crepey Skin? An Expert on Why This Underrated Product Deserves a Comeback https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-body-butters/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-body-butters/#respond Fri, 15 Dec 2023 22:38:39 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=213328 Winter skin woes, be gone.

The post Dealing With Dry, Crepey Skin? An Expert on Why This Underrated Product Deserves a Comeback appeared first on Camille Styles.

Baby, it’s cold outside! And while there are many joys to wintry weather, my skin doesn’t relish the season the same way my spirit does. But I’ll admit, there is a silver lining. I take the plummeting temps as an opportunity to spend even more time on my skin and body care routines. Summer’s skinimalism is out and in its place is winter skin that needs some serious nourishing. As a proactive step, I’m loading up on the best body butters for the ultimate skin-smoothing routine.

A wintertime skincare routine is essential. It doesn’t just keep flaky skin at bay, but it helps nourish your body’s microbiome and prevent premature aging. Crepey, cracked skin is one thing, but fundamentally dehydrated skin is another. Thankfully, you can rehab parched skin with a little TLC—or a lot of body butter.

Mary Ralph Bradley using the best body butters.

What is body butter?

Body butter is the ultimate balm for dry skin. Full of vitamins A and E and omega-3 fatty acids, it helps rejuvenate skin elasticity to fight premature aging. All these nourishing vitamins and fatty acids keep your skin cell membranes healthy to lock in moisture and create a protective barrier around the layers of your skin.

But is a body butter suitable for everyone? The thick, occlusive formulas of body butters deeply nourish skin—but can they clog your pores? Some people shy away from body butters for fear of too much of a good thing. To get to the bottom of it, I spoke to a skincare expert who happens to be the founder of my personal favorite body butter brands. Naa-Sakle Akuete, CEO & Founder of Eu’Genia Shea, a family-founded brand dedicated to empowering women through the sale of raw shea butter.

Read on for all you need to know before diving into the wide and moisturizing world of body butter. From the best ingredients to incorporating body butter into your routine, we’re getting into the nitty-gritty. Plus, scroll to the end to find the right body butter for you.

Body Butter Versus Body Cream

Body lotions, butters, and creams, oh my! How do you tell the difference—and how do you pick which one to use?

“Body butter has a concentrated balm-like consistency that deeply moisturizes and is used mainly on target areas of concern,” says Akuete. “A cream has a lotion-like consistency and can be more readily spread onto the skin.”

The Best Ingredient to Look For

Akuete says to focus on non-comedogenic ingredients, such as unrefined shea butter. “The refining process strips the shea of its natural color, scent, and often vitamins,” she notes.

Other nourishing ingredients to look for include:

 • Jojoba Butter
 • Cupuaçu Butter
 • Cocoa Butter
 • Coconut Oil
 • Argan Oil
 • Honey
 • Phytosterols (a type of plant-based oil)
The best body butters.

Ingredients to Avoid

Stray from pore-clogging ingredients, says Akuete, as well as those that can irritate the skin. Specifically, this looks like:

 • Fragrance + Parfum
 • Parabens
 • Phthalates
 • Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA)
 • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS)

Who should use a body butter?

If you’re new to body butter, get ready to revel in all the hydration. Trust: there’s always room for a body butter in your routine.

“Body butter can be used by everyone,” says Akuete. “Especially those with intense skin concerns like eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. Even people with oily skin and acne can benefit from using body butter, so long as the products don’t clog pores.”

When to Use Body Butter in Your Routine

Body butter locks in moisture, so it’s best used directly after a shower—or following a long soak in the bath. You can also use it on any especially dry areas whenever they need some love. Think elbows, hands, knees, and heels.

“I use Eu’Genia body butters when I’ve gotten out of the shower or washed my hands,” says Akuete. “The Eu’Genia balms came in especially handy when I was pregnant with my daughter—my belly is completely stretch mark free!”

The Best Body Butters for Smoother, Softer Skin

Eu’Genia Shea Butter

The least intimidating way to use body butter is this pure shea butter formula. “If you’re nervous about trying [a body butter] for the first time, says Akuete, I’d recommend the Eu’Genia Dermatological Formula, which is great for people with sensitive skin.”

Skin Food Body Butter

You probably have—or are currently coveting—the cult-favorite Weleda Skin Food hand lotion. Take your skincare a step further with some full-body moisturization to help nourish your skin.

Honey is a powerful ingredient for your skin, adding its own anti-inflammatory properties to the antioxidant- and vitamin-rich formulas of most body butters. This pick combines the benefits of both to create a skin-smoothing concoction.

Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter

Made of pure, whipped argan oil, this body butter is a luxe and lightweight option for anyone intimidated by thicker formulations.

I Tried PRFM As An Alternative to Under-Eye Filler—Here Are My Results https://camillestyles.com/beauty/about-platelet-rich-fibrin-matrix-prfm/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/about-platelet-rich-fibrin-matrix-prfm/#respond Tue, 05 Dec 2023 12:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=254254 A before & after you won't believe.

The post I Tried PRFM As An Alternative to Under-Eye Filler—Here Are My Results appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
Editor’s note: This story highlights the intensive skincare treatment, PRFM. Videos below show the cosmetic procedure in process, which includes the use of needles.

Growing up under the harsh Australian sun, you’re taught to apply and reapply sunscreen from a very early age. (The Slip, Slop, Slap campaign is ingrained in my memory!) So, since the spry age of 14, I have taken a fairly disciplined approach to skincare. While I wouldn’t say I’m a guinea pig when it comes to beauty treatments, I’m the first to raise my hand when an exciting advancement in technology comes on the market. My goal? Prevention over cure.

This philosophy also extends to skincare. If you’re not taking care of your skin health with a daily routine (vitamin C, retinol, and sunscreen are key!), then you’re really not going to see the best results from a professional treatment. I have spoken to SO many estheticians and dermatologists over the years, and while they have their favorite laser, peel, injectable, etc. they all say the best results occur when you have a consistent at-home skincare routine. Not a single beauty treatment I’ve tried would have the efficacy it did if I didn’t practice diligent skincare.

With that disclaimer in mind, let’s get to the newest game-changing treatment I can’t stop talking about: PRFM—i.e., Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix.

Sacha Strebe PRFM treatment.
A few days after PRFM.

I Tried PRFM—Here’s What to Know

Now that I am 43, I wanted an alternative to filler. It’s not that I’ve stopped having filler or think that it’s bad. On the contrary, I love a little baby filler to help with the inevitable bone loss on my face. (I had my first under-eye filler at 37.) That said, you want to be careful not to overdo it, and I was starting to feel like my under-eyes still needed a little extra support to strengthen the thin, crepey skin.

So I went to see my favorite and most trusted RN, medical aesthetic provider and founder of The Things We Do, Vanessa Lee. She also did my cheek, lower jawline, and brow thread lift a few years ago—which is still looking snatched thanks to the new collagen production and skin strengthening as a result. Lee and her team (she trains them all personally) is the ONLY person I would recommend to administer threads in LA.

Given the amazing results of my PRFM, I think they’re a great alternative for those either looking to enhance their under-eye filler or want an alternative option. I did have a little bruising afterward but nothing I couldn’t cover up with makeup. And as you can see, my skin around that area looks healthy and strong.

Not sure if it’s right for you? I sat down with Lee after my treatment to get the lowdown on PRFM—how it works, healing time, cost, and so much more.

Vanessa Lee RN
Vanessa Lee, RN

Vanessa Lee is a medical aesthetic provider and founder of The Things We Do.

What is PRFM? What does it stand for and how did it become a cosmetic treatment?

PRFM stands for Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix. It’s a treatment that utilizes a concentrated form of your own blood’s platelets and growth factors to rejuvenate and enhance the appearance of the skin. PRFM is the next generation of PRP science. We can now use the growth factors from your own blood to create a thin, gel-like matrix of growth factors and place it into your thinning tissue. Compared to PRP, PRFM is much more concentrated, allowing for greater longevity and better results.

How does PRFM work?

PRFM works by harnessing the body’s natural healing and rejuvenating processes. It’s 100% natural. The procedure involves drawing a small amount of the patient’s blood, which is then processed by centrifuge to separate the platelets and growth factors from the rest of the blood components. We like to call it liquid gold!

This concentrated PRFM is then injected into specific areas of the skin, promoting collagen production, tissue regeneration, and improved skin texture and tone.

Once your blood has been processed by centrifuge to extract the platelets and growth factors, the skin is prepped for injection.

When would you recommend PRFM to someone?

PRFM is great for anyone wanting to enhance their skin’s texture, tone, and elasticity. It’s especially useful for addressing fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and signs of aging or damage. PRFM can also complement other aesthetic treatments. It can be done by itself or to complement fillers and/or threads.

PRFM is especially useful for addressing fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and signs of aging or damage.

Who is the right candidate for PRFM?

Almost anyone! The right candidate for PRFM is typically someone in good general health who wants to address skin concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, and texture irregularities. It can be suitable for various ages, but it’s more commonly considered by individuals in their late 20s to 50s. It’s also pregnancy-safe! Those with certain medical conditions, blood disorders, or severe skin issues might not be suitable candidates. A consultation with a qualified provider is necessary to determine candidacy.

Once prepped, the concentrated PRFM is then injected into specific areas of the skin (in this case, the area of concern is under the eye) to help promote collagen production, tissue regeneration, and improved skin texture and tone.

Why is PRFM so effective?

PRFM’s effectiveness is attributed to the growth factors and platelets it delivers to the skin. They stimulate collagen production, improve blood circulation, and enhance tissue regeneration, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

Are you seeing more people opt for PRFM versus filler?

Sometimes PRFM is recommended as the first step in a patient’s beauty plan and filler as the second step a few months later. PRFM’s job is to help support and thicken skin tissue before it’s the filler’s turn to provide the structural reinforcement for facial harmony. Think of PRFM as the glaze to facial balancing.

When would you recommend filler over PRFM?

Dermal fillers are recommended when volume restoration is the primary goal, such as plumping up hollow cheeks or enhancing the lips. Fillers provide immediate results by adding volume to specific areas, whereas PRFM focuses on overall skin improvement and rejuvenation.

How do you know PRFM is right for you?

PRFM might be right for you if you’re looking to improve skin texture, tone, and overall appearance without adding significant volume. We always recommend a consultation to determine if PRFM aligns with your goals and if it’s the right treatment for you.

You are always at the forefront of new technology and procedures in cosmetics. When did you first learn about PRFM and how long have you been offering this treatment at The Things We Do?

PRFM caught our attention as an innovative cosmetic approach, and we swiftly integrated it into our practice at The Things We Do a few years ago. Our decision to offer PRFM was driven by our commitment to providing our patients with safe and effective treatments that align with the desire for natural-looking results. PRFM resonated with our philosophy of utilizing the body’s own resources for rejuvenation, and we recognized its potential to address a wide range of skin concerns.

Where can you get PRFM?

The most popular treatment areas include the face, under-eyes, neck, décolletage, and hands. PRFM can improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and minimize acne scars. It’s also super effective at tightening and plumping the skin.

How long does the treatment take?

One PRFM treatment typically takes about 60 minutes, depending on the treatment area.

When can you expect to see results?

Results from PRFM treatment become noticeable gradually over several weeks as collagen production is stimulated and tissue regeneration occurs. Over several months, you’ll notice the results continue to improve.

What is the downtime?

PRFM treatments usually involve minimal downtime. Some redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection sites may occur, but these side effects are generally mild and temporary.

How should you take care of your skin post-PRFM?

After a PRFM treatment, be sure to:

 • protect your skin from the sun
 • use gentle cleansers
 • stay hydrated with mild moisturizers
 • avoid intense activities
 • skip makeup initially
 • follow your provider’s guidelines

How long does it last?

The duration of PRFM results varies from person to person, but most can expect improvements to last between 1-2 years. Maintenance treatments can help you get the most out of your results.

Do you need a follow-up appointment?

A follow-up appointment is often scheduled 4-6 weeks after treatment to monitor your progress and discuss any additional treatments or adjustments if needed.

How many treatments do you recommend?

The number of recommended treatments varies based on your specific needs. Some achieve desired results with a single treatment, while others might benefit from a series of treatments spaced a few months apart.

How much does it cost?

The cost of PRFM treatments can vary widely based on factors such as location and the number of treatment areas.

Sacha Strebe one month after prfm.
One month post-treatment.

What questions should you ask yourself before getting PRFM?

Before getting PRFM, it’s important to consider your specific skin concerns, your expectations for results, and your commitment to follow the post-treatment care instructions. Evaluate your overall health and any medical conditions that might affect your eligibility for the treatment.

How do you find a good provider?

Finding a qualified provider is crucial for safe and effective PRFM treatment. Ask about their training and experience with PRFM. Be sure to find someone who will truly advocate for you.

What are possible complications that can result from PRFM?

Complications from PRFM treatments are typically rare. However, potential risks can include infection, bruising, and adverse reactions to the injection. To avoid these issues, choose a reputable provider, be transparent about your medical history, and follow pre- and post-treatment instructions.

If you experience any unusual or severe side effects, consult your provider as soon as possible.

When beauty founder Tata Harper was young, her family passed down their beauty secrets. One of them was the power of using an oil cleanser. You may have heard of double cleansing, but it’s not just another buzzy beauty trend that will die out or get debunked. It’s an ancient ritual that has been treasured for centuries in many cultures. And now, oil cleansers are everywhere.

“Double-cleansing dates back as far as the 14th century and originated in Asia,” Tata Harper told me. “Women would use a cleansing oil to remove their heavy makeup and follow with a foaming cleanser. This practice has been a staple in many Asian beauty routines for centuries and was introduced to me through my beauty-obsessed grandmother and mother in Colombia.”

“Oil cleansing is for everyone.”

Tata Harper

Oil cleansers, like many good things, are often underrated or misunderstood. You might be hesitant to add another step to your beauty routine. Or, you might wonder can another cleanser really make a difference?

But once you start oil cleansing, you won’t want to go back. Cleansing is the first step of your routine — you want to make sure you’re doing it right. Otherwise, all the fancy serums and beauty trends won’t make a difference.

The potential benefits of oil cleansing include:

 • Lifts excess sebum
 • Prevents breakouts
 • Gently clears makeup and SPF
 • Detoxes clogged pores
 • Nourishes skin
 • Prevents dryness
 • Removes dry, dead skin flakes

To learn more, I spoke to Tata Harper about why we should all start oil cleansing. Then, I tried some of the best oil cleansers for myself. Here’s everything you need to know.

Founder of Tata Harper Skincare

What is an oil cleanser?

Oil Cleansing is the practice of washing your face with an oil-based cleanser rather than a traditional cleanser. It’s commonly utilized in the form of double cleansing which involves using an oil cleanser followed by a more traditional cleanser.

An oil cleanser is amazing for removing that first layer of buildup on your skin like dirt, oil, and SPF. It’s also a fantastic makeup remover that nourishes your skin while cleansing, unlike some other harsh makeup removers that rely on synthetic ingredients to cleanse skin.

Are oil cleansers better than other cleansers?

I don’t think it’s a matter of better or worse, but rather personal preference and skin care goals. I think oil cleansing is most effective when it is used in tandem with a more traditional cleanser to really make sure your skin is clean and you aren’t just going through the motions of washing your face.

Is there a type of oil cleanser for each skin type? Can oily skin use an oil cleanser?

Oil cleansers are suitable for all skin types and actually an excellent choice for oily skin types. It’s a common misconception that using an oil cleanser with already oily skin with exacerbate the issue when it is actually incredibly beneficial in controlling oily skin. When your skin is oily, it’s often a signal that your skin is craving moisture and needs this extra nourishment and care.

Is oil cleansing good for pores?

Yes! Oil cleansing is great for pores because it lifts excess sebum, the oily substance your skin produces that causes acne when not properly addressed. Using a cleansing oil helps dissolve this oily, waxy substance and other debris left on the face from the day.

Who should avoid oil cleansing?

Oil cleansing is for everyone. Oftentimes people with oily skin think that using a cleansing oil will increase their oiliness, but it’s actually the opposite. When the skin is overproducing oil, it means that it is craving nourishment and hydration, which makes using an oil cleanser an excellent choice.

How often should I oil cleanse?

I use our Nourishing Oil Cleanser every single night. It’s my first step in my skincare routine so I can be sure I’m removing all of the build-up that has accumulated on my skin. Oil cleansing is suitable for everyday use and can be used in place of a traditional makeup remover or micellar water.

What are the best ingredients in cleansing oil? Are there any ingredients to avoid?

The best ingredients to utilize in cleansing oils are non-comedogenic carrier oils like Sunflower Seed, Jojoba, and Grapeseed oil. It’s important to include only non-comedogenic ingredients to prevent any clogged pores. Antioxidants like Vitamin E and Green Tea Oil are also amazing ingredients to formulate cleansing oils with because they help to protect the skin from free radical damage and provide additional healing skin benefits. Botanical extracts like our farm-grown calendula help soothe and nourish skin when included in cleansing oils.

I Tried It — Which Oil Cleansers are worth the hype

I’ve been using oil cleansers for years and I’ve developed a small obsession. And, subsequently, a small collection. I oil cleanse with a different cleanser every night depending on my skin’s needs: removing makeup, clearing breakouts, or reviving tight (and admittedly, over-exfoliated) skin. And on a low-maintenance night, I even just treat my skin to a quick oil cleanse and leave it at that. Whether you’re oil cleanser-curious or looking for a new oil cleanser to replace your latest empty, here are some of the best oil cleansers for every skin type.

Best Oil Cleanser for Dull or Dehydrated Skin — Tata Harper Nourishing Oil Cleanser

This is the oil cleanser I turn to when my skin looks dull and feels dehydrated. Its blend of vitamins and botanicals makes my skin feel clean, without stripping it. I especially like this for dehydrated skin, since it includes barrier-building ingredients like jojoba oil and squalane, plus antioxidants for brighter, stronger skin. Plus, Tata uses it every single night before bed!

Best Oil Cleanser for Clearing Pores — DAMDAM Silk Rice Cleansing Oil

The name doesn’t lie. The texture of this oil cleanser really is just like silk. Rice water has been lauded for helping hair grow faster and stronger. But it has impressive skin benefits, too. In this softening cleanser, rice bran oil helps clear excess sebum to prevent pore buildup and clear away debris. This also makes it an effective makeup remover, gently melting away makeup without irritation or leaving behind residue.

Best Oil Cleanser for Sensitive Skin — Wonder Valley Oil Cleanser

olive oil for skin

Olive oil is one of beauty’s buzziest ingredients for a reason. It’s a gentle but powerful ingredient that is rich in vitamins and antioxidants, making it great for cleansing, moisturizing, and softening your skin. I use this when my skin feels extra sensitive because of its honey-like texture. It feels like a cleansing cushion for my skin and turns into a milky emulsion upon rinsing for balanced, gentle cleansing.

Best Oil Cleanser for Fine Lines — UMA Absolute Anti-Aging Regenerative Oil Cleanser

A great benefit of oil cleansing is that they give you an extra change in your routine to target specific skin concerns. As you massage this oil cleanser onto dry skin, I recommend really focusing on the fine lines around your eyes and mouth to help soften and strengthen that skin. Power ingredients like honey and oat deliver all the good stuff to your skin to support collagen and elastin production.

Other Oil Cleansers to Try

Best Oil Cleanser for Breakouts — Susanne Kaufmann Deep Cleansing Oil

Worried an oil cleanser won’t give you the deep clean you need? Whether you follow this up with a foaming cleanser or not, this deep-cleansing oil goes deep into your pores to detox the skin of impurities and rejuvenate acne-prone skin. Vitamin E lifts impurities like acne-causing sebum and sunflower oil supports the skin’s protective layer for more radiant skin.

Best Drugstore Oil Cleanser — DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

This affordable, all-in-one product is a makeup remover, cleanser, and makeup brush cleaner. You can use it as the first step in your double cleansing routine or on its own to dissolve makeup and cleanse your skin with the power of olive oil. You can even use it to gently clean your makeup brushes — which you should definitely be doing more often than you currently are.

Best Anti-Pollution Oil Cleanser — PCA SKIN Daily Cleansing Oil

Best Oil Cleanser for Uneven Texture — MARA Chia + Moringa Algae Enzyme Cleansing Oil

Mara’s signature algae enzymes make this a cult favorite brand for a reason. In this cleanser, the gently exfoliating fuit enzymes — papaya, pineapple, grapefruit and pumpkin — work together to lightly exfoliate the skin. Thought an oil clenaser couldn’t be exfoliating? Think again. It ever-so-gently sloughs off flaky, uneven skin to give you a smoother complexion and help maintain your moisture barrier without causing further damage.

You smell good. No compliment makes me swoon more. And believe me, it’s hard-earned. Until high school, I was allergic to pretty much all synthetic fragrances. Perfumes instantly broke me out in hives. Luckily, I grew out of this allergy. But over a decade of scanning labels and bottles for potentially breakout-inducing ingredients has made me cautious. This is where my love of clean beauty—and scented body products—began.

I lean toward picks that layer yourself with all the sweet-smelling goodness without being overwhelming. Plus, if you spray your favorite fragrance over complementary body products, it can make even the most popular scents (Santal 33, anyone?) feel personal. A sensory scentscape, if you will.

But even without an allergy or sensitive skin, you might be cautious about which to choose. From harsh chemicals to irritating alcohols, read on to discover what to look for in the best scented body products.

Your Guide to Scented Body Products

I grew up in the heyday of mall-brand body products. Some of the most coveted items in the girls’ locker room were the cloying concoctions by Bath and Body Works, Victoria’s Secret, and Soap and Glory. Ah, the early aughts adolescent rituals. As an adult now, I’m much more discerning. And luckily, the sweet, vanilla scents have come a long way since my youth.

Scented body products formulated today are no longer nauseatingly saccharine. Many are made of clean, nourishing ingredients rather than the synthetic goop we spent years indiscriminately applying to our skin. Now, we’re spoiled with choice. High-quality products are way easier to access—you just have to know what to look for.

In-Shower vs. Post-Shower Products

If you haven’t heard: bodycare is the new skincare. And highly-effective body products are emerging every day to give you smooth, soft skin all over. Thankfully, they’re not only clean, but they smell amazing, too.

There are two main types of scented body products: in-shower products and post-shower products. Your body washes and body scrubs might smell great in the shower, but they often don’t leave a strong enough scent after rinsing. (Unless you’re using the distinct scent of Irish Spring—IYKYK.) This is where post-shower products come in. From oils to lotions and balms, layering matching products helps lock in both moisture and scent.

Ingredients to Avoid

Luckily, for most people, scented body products are pretty safe for your skin. The skin on your body is more resilient than your face, so unless you have hyper-sensitive skin or an allergy, even synthetic fragrances shouldn’t cause irritation.

But there’s no harm in being cautious. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, fragrance is associated with eczema and is a common cause of contact dermatitis. Even Balsam of Peru, which is commonly used to cover up common fragrances for “unscented” products, can cause irritation. So where does that leave you?

More and more people are clean fragrance-curious, especially since some fragrances can be endocrine disruptors and even carcinogens. If you’re trying to be mindful of the chemicals and fragrances you put on your skin, these are the ingredients to avoid:

 • Phthalates
 • Styrene
 • Cinnamal
 • Isoeugenol
 • Limonene
 • Linalool
Bathroom beauty products.

Clean Fragrances to Look For

Naturally scented body products usually use plant-based scents or essential oils. Plant-based fragrances are either naturally occurring or made of the molecules that give plants their scents. Essential oils are more common natural fragrances, though they might still cause irritation for some people. If you’re concerned about allergies or breakouts, test your scented body products on a small patch of skin first and consult a dermatologist before adding new products to your routine

Best Scented Body Bar: Wonder Valley Hinoki Bar

Bar soap is back in a big way. But instead of harsh surfactants and chemical smells, these new-age bar soaps are made of nourishing ingredients that don’t strip your skin or leave behind an unpleasant scent. Wonder Valley’s Hinoki Body Bar blends the brand’s signature extra virgin olive oil with coconut and avocado oils. Plus, the buzzy scent of hinoki has been hailed as the new santal.

Best Scented Body Wash: Kosas Good Body Skin Exfoliating Body Wash

I have been using this body wash for years and recommend it to everyone—partly because of how well it works, partly because of how good it smells. It’s a gentle, natural exfoliator, using AHAs and plant enzymes to unclog pores and smooth texture. I especially recommend it after the gym to prevent post-workout breakouts. It’s naturally scented with citrus and vanilla for a fresh fragrance.

Best Waterless Scented Body Product: BAWDY Beauty Bawdy Wash

Waterless products are quickly rising in popularity. They’re more sustainable, you get more bang for your buck, and the concentrated formulas mean more effective ingredients. This award-winning body wash clarifies the skin with kaolin clay, deeply hydrates with seaweed, and invigorates with a blend of summer florals.

Best Scented Body Scrub: Nopalera Cactus Flower Exfoliant

Nopalera’s cactus-based products both cleanse and moisturize the skin. Plus, the hibiscus flower contains antioxidants, vitamin C, and AHAs. This oil cleanser, exfoliant, and moisturizer trifecta has yet another benefit: the natural scents of jasmine and grapefruit oils make it smell great.

Best Scented Body Oil: Saltair Santal Bloom Nourishing Body Oil

This lightweight blend of oils is quick-drying and full of nourishing plant actives. It contains kukui, cacay, squalane, and karanja oils, plus fermented saururus oil for fatty acids. The santal scent also has notes of amber, sandalwood, and musk.

Best Firming Scented Body Oil: UMA Absolute Anti-Aging Body Oil

I am obsessed with the smell of this body oil. Its dark rose and neroli scent makes it my favorite product to wear on a night out for an extra glow and a natural base scent. Plus, the lightweight texture and firming ingredients means it quickly locks in moisture and over time reduces fine lines.

Best Scented Body Balm: Reed + Gwen Supercharged Reishi Body Melt

This mushroom-based balm combines the nourishing properties of adaptogenic reishi with hyaluronic acid and vegan ceramides for a barrier-boosting balm. A little goes a long way—and it melts on your skin for a luxuriously silky feel. Put this on before bed to moisturize your skin overnight and drift away to the smell of the calming essential oil blend of lavender, sage, cedar, and citrus.

Best Scented Body Lotion: DedCool Hand + Body Lotion 01 “Taunt”

This Gen Z-favorite brand is known for its clean, sustainable laundry detergents. Now, you can get those iconic scents on your skin, too. (Talk about scent pairing!) My favorite is the “Taunt” scent, which has notes of bergamot, amber, and vanilla.

Best Scented Body Serum: iota Superplant Body Serum+

You’ve heard of superfoods. Well, this serum uses superplants to add a nutritional boost to your body. It’s a body care product fit for your face — a toner, essence, treatment, gel mask, and hydrator all in one with the natural scent of lavender.

Best Scented Body Butter: Hanahana Beauty Amber Vanilla Shea Body Butter

You can’t go wrong with this body butter. Shea butter is a body care staple thanks to its ultra-nourishing properties. The whipped texture of Hanahana Beauty’s shea butter makes it easy to spread for an instant, non-greasy glow you won’t believe. They have a variety of scents but number one on my list is the Amber Vanilla.

Best Scented Body SPF: Bask Suncare SPF 50

This SPF 50 is hands-down my favorite sunscreen with zero white cast and a great scent. The nostalgic fragrance of vanilla and coconut makes it smell like a beach in the best way possible.

There are a few kernels of knowledge every adult should have in their arsenal. Some examples: how to set a budget, when to apologize, and the best drugstore moisturizer to buy in a pinch. Whether you’ve traveled somewhere new and forgotten your skincare or just want the biggest bang for your buck, a solid moisturizer is crucial for your every day. (It’s been said that a cleanser, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen is really all you ever need.)

How to Find the Best Drugstore Moisturizer

However, it should be noted that “drugstore” is a bit of a blanket term these days, but it really just translates to “affordable.” And thanks to dermatologist-loved brands like Versed, Neutrogena, and Cetaphil, we know there are some incredible formulas that are wallet-friendly and efficacious.

Of course, knowing what ingredients your skin really needs is always the best way to navigate the beauty aisles. So I tapped one of my favorite aestheticians, Natalie Burt, for expert guidance.

Natalie Burt

Natalie Burt is a lead aesthetician in Dallas who specializes in customized facials and Korean beauty techniques.

How to Incorporate a Moisturizer Into Your Routine

Burt recommends using a moisturizer twice a day. Maintaining a strong moisture barrier is key for preventing irritation and oiliness. Commit to treating your face with a solid moisturizer morning and night for balanced, beautiful skin.

In the morning, slather on a moisturizing cream as the last step of your routine before SPF (and after a vitamin C lotion or antioxidant). At night, moisturize as the final step—or the final step before your face oil for ultimate hydration.

“If you’re venturing into retinols, you can also mix your retinol with moisturizer to acclimate easier with less irritation,” Burt adds. “Good for my sensitive skin clients!”

Ingredients to Look For

A healthy skin barrier requires barrier-supportive ingredients—i.e., ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. Below, Burt breaks down the best types of moisturizers based on your skin type.

The Best Moisturizer For Oily/Combination Skin Types: Humectants

These lightweight moisturizers pull in water to maintain skin elasticity. Look for hyaluronic acid and glycerin.

The Best Moisturizer For Dry Skin, Fine Lines, and Wrinkles: Emollients

These moisturizers help restore barrier function and improve skin texture. Look for shea butter, squalane, and oils like rosehip or argan.

The Best Moisturizer For Extremely Dry or Damaged Skin: Occlusives

These moisturizers help form a protective seal over the skin to prevent water loss. Look for petrolatum, dimethicone, and waxes like carnauba or beeswax.

How to Know if Your Skin Barrier Is Damaged—and What to Do About It https://camillestyles.com/beauty/skin-barrier-repair-tips/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/skin-barrier-repair-tips/#respond Wed, 11 Oct 2023 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=246281 Stronger skin is simpler than you think.

What comes to mind when you think of getting stronger? Physically, you might consider adding more protein to your diet and cycle-syncing your weight-training workouts. You might even think about increasing your mental toughness through therapy or mindfulness practices like meditating or journaling. Almost always, we think we need to add things to our routine to make us stronger. But if you want to achieve stronger skin? The answer might be in taking things out of your routine. Trust: when it comes to skin barrier repair, your complexion will thank you.

Your skin barrier, aka your skin microbiome, controls your skin’s strength or sensitivity. In fact, many people who think they have sensitive skin might just have a weakened skin barrier. Though some are born with sensitive skin, others get it through wear and tear. Redness? Irritation? Product sensitivity? All of these could be signs of a weak microbiome.

We believe in getting to the root cause of any wellness concern, from your hormones to your gut health. So if you’re seeking stronger skin, start with skin barrier repair.

The Skinny on Your Skin Microbiome

There was a time when talking about ingredients in skin care meant DIY lemon juice masks—ouch—and homemade avocado facials. (With the price of avocados these days, you could probably just get a professional facial.) Thankfully, with how far skincare literacy has advanced, it follows that our understanding of the skin as an organ is improving, too.

The skin microbiome is so well known that #skinbarrier on TikTok has amassed over 4.4 billion views. But with great virality often comes great misunderstanding. To pare it down: your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin. It’s made up of ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids, natural moisturizing factors, and, of course, water. A healthy skin barrier means healthy skin. However, an unhealthy skin barrier might be the cause of issues such as redness, irritation, acne, dehydration, and more.

Causes of a Damaged Skin Barrier

A damaged skin barrier is usually the result of a combination of factors. Your lifestyle is a big part of your overall health, so of course it affects your skin. Lifestyle causes of a damaged skin barrier might include:

But, by in large, the biggest cause of a damaged skin barrier are harsh skincare products. From products that strip you of natural moisture to abrasive exfoliants, too much of a good thing might increase your skin sensitivity. Watch out for:

 • Chemical exfoliants
 • Physical exfoliants
 • Harsh, stripping soaps
 • Alcohols
 • Fragrances

The Experts on Skin Barrier Repair

“I have noticed an uptick in our customers asking for products to repair their skin barrier,” says Kendra Kolb Butler, founder of Alpyn Beauty. “I feel this may be attributed to the increase in at-home exfoliants and retinols.”

I also spoke to April Gargiulo, founder of the cult-favorite brand Vintner’s Daughter, about the importance of using “fewer, but better” products to preserve your skin barrier. “We all need to wean ourselves off the idea that more is better,” Gargiulo says. “By overdoing it with products, the skin itself can become irritated and imbalanced.”

Glowy skin.

Why is the skin barrier so important?

Gargiulo: Your skin barrier is there to do two things—to protect and to defend. So it’s there to defend, which is to keep aggressors out and defend your skin against things that could irritate it. And then it is there to protect what is in your skin, which is mostly hydration. You need both sides of the coin to have your most healthy skin.

What does a damaged skin barrier look like?

Butler: Skin is typically dry, scaly, itchy, rough, and discolored when the skin barrier is damaged. Healthy skin is plump, radiant, and smooth. You will experience less flakiness, irritation, and dryness when your barrier is fully healed. You should also notice a reduction in redness.

How long does it take to repair a damaged skin barrier?

Butler: In my experience, it could take anywhere between a couple of weeks to six months for the skin barrier to repair. It depends on the extent of the damage. The fastest way to repair your skin barrier is to nourish and hydrate your skin. Lay off the harsh exfoliants and focus on moisturizing. Stop any aggressive treatments that may be contributing to the problem.

What ingredients should you use to repair the skin barrier?

Gargiulo: Use fewer and better products. It’s about the simplicity of ingredients. Focus on hydration and moisture and a proper pH for your skin. And then focus on those nutrients that help to balance and add strength and resilience to the skin.

Butler: Stay away from any harsh or aggressive cleansing products and exfoliators when repairing the skin barrier. Less is more in this case. At Alpyn Beauty, we always combine a wild plant with clinical actives to achieve the best results possible. For people who are struggling with irritated or sensitive skin, look for anything with a seal from the National Eczema Association as they have strict requirements. Also look for ceramides, peptides, and hydrating ingredients.

The Best Products for Skin Barrier Repair

How you approach skin barrier repair depends on the extent of sensitivity to your skin. Leave a chemical exfoliant on too long? Overdo it with the at-home peels? Forget sunscreen? You probably only need to cool it for a few days and maybe use a barrier-boosting mask. But to repair more consistent damage and persisting sensitivity, make sure all your products are supporting your skin barrier. Look for products that are gentle enough to prevent further irritation and powerful enough to help repair your moisture barrier.

From start to finish, here’s all the skin barrier-safe products to add to your routine.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Best Cleansing Balm: Dr. Barbara Sturm Microbiotic Gentle Cleansing Balm

Apply this balm to dry skin to intensely hydrate with its balm-to-gel texture. Start your routine with prebiotics to support faster skin recovery and probiotics to prevent acne and skin inflammation.

Best Cleansing Conditioner: U Beauty The Mantle Skin Conditioning Wash

For a more milky cleanser texture, this gentle, conditioning wash dissolves makeup and deeply cleanses without any irritation. It keeps your skin pH balanced and fortifies skin health with a pre/probiotic complex and hyaluronic acid.

Best Facial Mist: Tower 28 SOS Rescue Spray

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: hypochlorous acid is a miracle ingredient. Made of the same stuff your white blood cells create for wound healing, it delivers targeted repair to anywhere you spray it. This facial spray is made to address irritation and redness, helping your skin heal itself and protecting your barrier. Pair it with the serum version for a one-two-punch of no-fuss, barrier protection. It even has the seal of acceptance from the National Eczema Association.

Best Toner: Paula’s Choice Nourishing Milky Toner

Paula’s Choice is best known for its exfoliating BHA toner, but you probably want to skip that when you’re pursuing skin barrier repair. Instead, opt for this gentle toner from their CALM collection. It contains allantoin, a proven soother of skin sensitivity, and marshmallow root, to strengthen the skin barrier and external irritants. It instantly hydrates and calms redness while preventing future sensitivity.

Best Essense: Rhode Glazing Milk

This is the product that put skin milks on the map. Essences are great for dehydrated, irritated skin because they deliver a lot of hydration and moisture in an easy-to-absorb product. This glazing milk is a nutrient-rich, lightweight formula that calms and preps the skin for instant and long-term relief. A fortified essence, it’s full of nourishing ingredients like ceramides for stronger skin, plus a magnesium, zinc, and copper blend to protect against free radicals.

It also contains other powerful ingredients like niacinamide and ceramides to repair and protect your skin. Developed to fortify your skin barrier, it can help clear breakouts caused by damaged skin without causing any new sensitivity.

Best Reparative Serum: Dr. Loretta Intense Replenishing Serum

One of my favorite serums of all time, this has the consistency of a super-thick hyaluronic acid serum—only it delivers so much more long-lasting nourishment to your skin. Its replenishing formula contains an expert blend of glycerin and lipid-based proteins to thoroughly nourish your skin and create a protective film over your skin barrier.

Best Splurgeworthy Serum: Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum

“The active botanical serum has all this gorgeous moisture,” says Gargiulo, making it a superstar for your skin barrier. “It has all these gorgeous plants that really help to fortify and strengthen and balance that outermost layer that that barrier.” Full of whole plants and botanicals, it’s carefully formulated with antioxidants and nourishing ingredients to be the perfect all-in-one serum.

Best Barrier Repair Moisturizer: Alpyn Beauty Super Peptide & Ghostberry Barrier Repair Cream

“I knew I wanted this to be a barrier repair cream from the very start,” said Butler. “I wrote the formula with the goal of obtaining the seal of acceptance from the National Eczema Association. It is a rich, restorative barrier repair cream with ceramides, ghostberries, and peptides to deeply replenish hydration and help relax the appearance of wrinkles. Ghostberry contains saponins with high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic effects on the skin.”

Best Night Treatment: Furtuna Skin Replenishing Balm

This thick, waxy balm is the closest to an overnight treatment your skin barrier will get. While it won’t fix your skin in one night, it works while you sleep to heal skin with ingredients like olive oil, jojoba oil, and beeswax. If you’re trying slugging to help heal your skin barrier, this is a great product to try.

Best Face Mask: Shani Darden Signature Nourishing Face Mask

This face mask by famed celebrity esthetician Shani Darden is a revitalizing clay mask that she uses on her clients post-extraction. Made to instantly calm irritation and fortify the skin barrier, this mask detoxes your skin gently while also nourishing it to leave skin restored and radiant. It’s fortified with ingredients like squalane, colloidal oatmeal, and a triple-tea complex to soothe and revitalize the skin.

The post Skin Milk, Explained—What to Know About These Buzzy New Products appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
Thanks to social media, beauty trends have reached a fevered pitch. On the tamer end of the spectrum, there are trends like #CleanLook, which has nothing to do with clean beauty. Then there are some seasonal trends like #TomatoGirl that ruled this summer. But trends seem to be getting more and more niche—and for some reason, they’re all related to food. Brownie Glazed Lips? Cinnamon Cookie Butter Hair? And now, skin milks have entered the chat.

Dairy may be on the outs, but milky skincare is all the rage. And unlike the more ephemeral trends, skin milks are here to stay. After slowly gaining momentum over the past few years, they now have the celebrity seal of approval—à la Hailey Bieber. Her brand, Rhode debuted its Glazing Milk skin barrier boost, complete with a “Got Milk”-style campaign that’s been relentless with its reach. Now, many brands are following suit. And it’s not just for the buzz—because skin milk actually works. But the question remains: What is it? And of course: do they involve any milk at all?

Woman applying face cream.

Skin Milk Explained

The first thing to address: no, skin milks don’t contain any actual milk. Rather than being defined by their ingredient list, these products are named for their texture. The allure—and efficacy—of milky, creamy beauty products isn’t new. In many ancient civilizations, bathing in milk was the ultimate luxury and purported to be the key to youthful, soft skin. And while this iteration of milky skin products is way less literal, it might actually be more effective.

The Skinny on Skin Milk Products

Skin milks come in many forms. Most often, we see the milky consistency leveraged to make either heavy-duty toners or lightweight serums. Since the texture is somewhere between a liquid and a cream, a skin milk offers hydration without the heaviness. In many cases, skin milks are marketed as multi-use products that can deliver the benefits of a toner, a serum, and even a moisturizer in just one product.

We’re also seeing more and more skin milks as cleansers and even as body products. Skin milks for the face and for the body are both compelling because they signal comfort. They’re the skincare equivalent of warm milk before bed, or a creamy, frothy matcha in the morning.

To learn more, I spoke to Yasmin Zeinab, founder of ABI AMÉ, about all things milky in the world of skincare. I even tested the brand’s skin milk, ABI AMÉ’s Summer Skin and other products to determine whether there’s truth behind the hype of this trend.

What is skin milk?

Skin milk typically refers to the texture of a product that is more fluid than standard lotion. They’re lightweight and have a consistency similar to milk, hence the name.

The key difference between traditional lotions and a skin milk is the texture and consistency. Skin milks are fluid and lightweight, whereas lotions have a thicker consistency. However, if a skin milk has been formulated correctly, it can provide the same heavy-hitting hydration as a lotion without the downside of the heavy, sticky texture.

What are the benefits of skin milk?

Skin milks are deeply hydrating and nourishing for the skin. They are typically formulated with very soothing ingredients so they’re great for anyone with dry or sensitive skin. The main benefit of a skin milk is its texture. The ultra-lightweight, milk-like texture doesn’t leave a residue or feel greasy, but it’s a deeply hydrating and nourishing formula.

What ingredients should we look for in skin milk?

You’ll want a skin milk that is deeply hydrating and also provides an occlusive layer on the skin so there is no need to layer a lotion over the top to seal in the moisture. Look for a mix of active, hydrating, and occlusive ingredients that are going to nourish and hydrate the skin while creating a barrier to lock in hydration.

Hydrating ingredients include:

 • Hyaluronic Acid
 • Sodium Hyaluronate
 • Glycerin
 • Ceramides
 • Tremella Fuciformis
 • Trehalose (an antioxidant)
 • Sodium PCA
 • Fatty Alcohols (cetyl and stearyl alcohol)
 • Lactic Acid (which is also an exfoliant and found naturally in, you guessed it, milk!)

Occlusive ingredients include:

 • Petrolatum
 • Fatty oils (argan oil, tamanu oil, olive oil)
 • Beeswax
 • Shea Butter
 • Squalane
 • Silicones

The Best Skin Milk Products, Tested

I’m not immune to the aesthetic videos of skincare lovers applying creamy, milky serums, cleansers, toners, and more all over their skin. While the skin milks on my feed have different benefits, they all look equally satisfying to apply. Of course, I had to try. Here’s where some of the most buzzed-about products ranked on my list.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Best for Hyperpigmentation: EADEM Milk Marvel Serum

For hyperpigmentation, dark marks, or melasma, this skin milk serum should be your holy grail. I don’t go a day without wearing it. It’s lightweight but delivers key ingredients that pack a punch. And, because of its silky, milky texture, it’s perfect for layering with all my other products.

EADEM Milk Marvel Serum

Niacinamide, amber algae, and encapsulated vitamin C work together to brighten and fade dark marks.

Best Multi-Tasking: Violette_FR Boum-Boum Milk

This is a saving grace for my lazier skincare days. It’s also a staple product for a more minimalist routine. This milky 3-in-1 spray by a cult French beauty brand is a toner, a serum, and a moisturizer. Just spray over your face after cleansing and you’re good to go. I’ve tried a lot of sprays that are filled with nothing but water and perfume. Instead, this one makes my skin feel instantly plump without the heaviness of multiple products or any sticky residue.

Violette_FR Boum-Boum Milk

This probiotic-based formula contains fermented birch sap and squalane to deeply hydrate dry skin while protecting the skin’s natural microbiome. Plus, mineral-rich glacial water is charged with several key minerals to help skin rehydrate and recover while olive leaf extract energizes skin cells.

$43

Best for Dry Skin: ABI AMÉ Summer Skin

Skin milks aren’t just for your face, they’re also all the rage in body care. Their lightweight texture means fast absorption, unlike most oils and lotions. So I tried the ABI AMÉ Summer Skin to test the skin milk bodycare trend for myself.

I’ve tried a lot of body lotions, serums, and oils, but I always run into one of two issues. Some of them take way too long to dry, leaving residue on my clothes and increasing my getting-ready time. Others are too thin to actually have any benefit. This skin milk is the exception. The texture is so satisfying and a little goes a long way. I also see an immediate difference in its effect on dry, scaly skin.

ABI AMÉ Summer Skin

Formulated with niacinamide, vitamin B5, and oat extract, this skin milk works quickly to plump and instantly hydrate and lock in moisture.

More Skin Milk Products to Try

Best for Oily Skin: Moon Juice Milk Jelly Foaming Cleanser

Part milk, part jelly, and with a foamy texture that feels so satisfying on the skin. The pH-balanced bubbles come from Coconut Ferment, which gently but deeply cleanse the skin. Barrier-boosting ingredients like adaptogenic reishi mushrooms hydrate as you cleanse without blocking your pores.

The post The Biggest Misconceptions About Clean Beauty, According to an Industry Insider appeared first on Camille Styles.

It wasn’t all that long ago that the term “clean beauty” was new concept. But thanks to the goop-ification of the beauty world and the industry’s rabid embrace of buzzwords, it’s now nearly impossible to escape. Words like “clean,” “natural,” and “organic”—none of which are properly regulated by the FDA—get thrown around so often they’ve lost meaning. You could easily find yourself on the verge of detoxing your entire skincare collection before pausing to ask yourself, “What does ‘clean beauty’ even mean?” LILFOX’s, Alexis Rose, has some thoughts.

“Clean beauty requires a holistic approach to both the end user and the planet—today as well as over the long term,” says Rose, founder of the Miami-based beauty brand LILFOX. “It’s about ingredients that are biodegradable, ocean-friendly, and without petrochemicals.”

Uncovering the Clean Beauty Trend with an Industry Insider

And though the luxury skincare line, known for evocative product names like Flower Goo, Marshmallow Poof, and Blue Legume, would certainly fall in the “clean” category (or “cleanical”), LILFOX’s site isn’t laden with the word. That’s intentional.

“We don’t focus too much on the term clean beauty in part because our customers know it means different things to different brands,” Rose explains. “We have been formulating with organic ingredients (all biodegradable) and earth and skin-friendly since we launched in 2014. We’re much more than clean beauty.”

Read on for more of Alexis Rose’s thoughts on the occasionally mystifying category, the importance of clinical-grade ingredients in the clean beauty world, and her favorite clean cosmetics.

How do you think “clean beauty” should actually be defined?

Clean beauty products should be formulated with ingredients that are of the earth, renewable, sustainable, biodegradable, and gentle on skin. Clean beauty is also about the packaging. We strive to minimize our footprint and ensure that the bottles and cartons we use are fully recyclable.

100% of the silicones trapped in our ecosystem are from wash-off personal care products.

Surprisingly few people are talking about the environmental impact of silicones and how most hair, makeup, and many skincare products are still formulated with them. It’s estimated that the annual production of cosmetic silicones has reached eight to ten million tons per year directly affecting the ocean’s rising temperatures. This poses a significant environmental concern. It’s rare that an environmental issue can be traced to one cause, but that is the case as 100% of the silicones trapped in our ecosystem are from wash-off personal care products. You’ll find them on cosmetics labeled as dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, polydimethylsiloxane, cyclomethicone, and the like. We never formulate with silicones.

cocokind Vitamin C Glow Serum

An effective vitamin C serum under $20? Skin-brightening dreams do come true. This super potent serum targets all forms of hyperpigmentation, while still being gentle enough for daily use. Skin is visibly brighter and more plump immediately upon use.

What are the biggest misconceptions about clean beauty?

That clean products are not effective. We’ve disproven that myth with LILFOX. We formulate with clinical-grade actives and have the results to show for it. The quality of our formulations positions LILFOX at the cross-section between clinical grade/dermatologist products and the natural and organic brands known more for their sensorial experience than results. We create highly efficacious products that offer the most gorgeous aromatherapeutic experience.

Maybe “cleanical” should be the new “clean.” What lab-grown ingredients do you think are worth their salt?

We’re loving botanical stem cells, live ferments, and simulated natural defense components. From the sea to the desert to the sky, the earth is our muse and the lab is a place where we make magic happen.

Blue Lagoon Algae Mask

Like a cool drink of water for the skin. This ultra-hydrating mask is infused with Icelandic microalgae native to the Blue Lagoon ecosystem to flood the skin with a powerful blend of antioxidants. Paired with silica, this mask is a signature step in our skincare routines—providing an extra dose of protection for the skin barrier, leaving your face soft, balanced, and smooth.

Dewy Bean Dream Smoothing Night Serum + Retinol Alternative

Whether you’ve tried retinol to no avail or want to avoid the dreaded purge, this retinol alternative is your bouncy, rejuvenated skin best friend. It’s a must for anyone looking to boost a tired-looking complexion, clear up blemishes, or even out skin tone. With results reported in under a week, it’s a gentle, but effective formula that’ll give your skin the bump-up it craves.

How can the beauty industry improve to better define clean beauty?

First and foremost, there should be a globally recognized standard for clean beauty. “Clean beauty” needs a clear definition that speaks to traceable ingredients, sustainable packaging, ethical production, and earth-friendly processes. The beauty industry needs to define our long-term goals for the “clean” category and ensure that we meet them.

Succulent Pudding Super Calm Emulsion

An ultra-hydrating formula that works for any skin type, any time of day? Sign us up. This luxe matcha green emulsion nourishes skin with a blend of niacinamide, licorice root, and ceramides to target redness and fine lines and plump up your complexion.

What other “clean” beauty products would you recommend?

I truly stand behind everything LILFOX. We’ve been meticulous from the beginning.

But I do find that some consumers are super conscious about the ingredients in their skincare but use conventional makeup that’s anything but clean. There was a time when clean color cosmetics didn’t perform as well as those formulated with lots of chemicals. Fortunately, that’s changed a lot in recent years. In terms of makeup, I love Kosas Tinted Face Oil, Kosas Cream Blushes, and the RMS Living Luminizer.

Kosas Tinted Face Oil Foundation

Called “the sweatpants of foundation” this silky-smooth formula is one we’re happy to wear all day long.

It takes years to cultivate a skincare routine. And when it comes to taking things to the next level, the best approach is to ask your dermatologist for treatments tailored to your skin. But taking home a prescription is one thing—effectively incorporating it into your skincare habits is another. If you’ve ever put out a Google search wondering “how to use tretinoin,” don’t worry—you’re definitely not alone.

Crafting a skincare routine can be a messy art. Trial, error, trial, (more error), then finally, you have a set of products that work. Until… they don’t. Whether you’re greeted with an unexpected breakout or tempted by a shiny new product, that carefully curated selection on your top shelf is bound to shift.

With new skin concerns come new ingredients that force you to change up your whole regimen. Enter: the tricky dance of learning how to use tretinoin in your skincare routine.

How to Use Tretinoin—and Reap the Glowy Benefits

Tretinoin is the most popular prescription retinoid—and for good reason. It’s effective, comes in different concentrations to tackle different concerns, and is a more targeted treatment than over-the-counter retinol. If you’ve tried your hand at retinol night creams but are still looking to fade hyperpigmentation, fight acne, and reduce signs of aging, tretinoin might just be for you. But to get the most out of it, it’s best to tailor the rest of your routine to prep your skin for your tretinoin journey.

Maybe it’s just me, but I always answer the call of a buzzy new ingredient, a well-packaged aesthetic, and the latest luxury holy grail. My routine has mostly been the same for the past few years, but I make a few exceptions. And to be totally honest, I barter with myself. If I finish one bottle of vitamin C, I let myself buy a replacement from the newest brand I’ve been eyeing on Instagram. Or, when the seasons change, I make an effort to mix things up. Exfoliating masks and collagen body creams in the winter, dewy serums and sunscreen in the spring, and so on.

But it’s not just my temperaments and whims that cause my skincare to shift and sway. Over the years, I’ve learned to listen to my skin. I calm down my routine when it gets overwhelmed, and I step it up when I break out. So, if you’re wondering how to use tretinoin, listening to your skin is paramount to avoid peeling and skin irritation.

What is tretinoin?

Tretinoin is a derivative of vitamin A, aka a retinoid. Tretinoin usually comes in a gel or cream form. Less commonly, it can also be applied topically in its liquid form or even taken orally. It’s one of the most popular ingredients in prescription-strength acne treatments. Like other retinols, tretinoin also helps fade fine lines and hyperpigmentation. Unlike retinols you’re familiar with, tretinoin is much stronger. So much so that it’s only available with a prescription.

Tretinoin cream and gel typically comes in three concentrations: 0.025%, 0.05%, and 0.1%. 0.025% is the mildest and is generally prescribed for overall skin improvement or mild acne. 0.05% is usually prescribed for anti-aging and reducing fine lines and wrinkles. 0.1% is the highest concentration and should be used with caution. Usually prescribed for people who already have experience with retinoids, it’s used for severe cases of acne, melasma, deep wrinkles, and fine lines. Your healthcare professional can help you decide the strength that fits your needs best.

What effect does tretinoin have on the skin?

Tretinoin accelerates cell turnover. But so do over-the-counter retinol creams. So what’s the difference between tretinoin and retinols you can find in your drugstore beauty aisle? Potency. For any vitamin A derivative to work, your skin needs to convert it to retinoic acid. I’ll spare you too much of the science, but tretinoin is stronger because it’s already in the form of retinoic acid. This means your skin doesn’t have to waste time converting it, and it can get right to work.

Because of its strength, tretinoin works faster than OTC retinols. It stimulates cell generation, sloughs away dead skin cells, and sweeps away bacteria from your pores. Additionally, studies show tretinoin helps stimulate collagen production and block acne-causing inflammatory pathways. Combined, this makes it a powerful acne fighter. It has also been FDA-approved for signs of photoaging, like fine lines and dark spots. Overall, it’s a highly effective ingredient for clearer, smoother, more even skin.

Who is a candidate for tretinoin?

Tretinoin is only available with a doctor’s prescription, so consult a dermatologist if you’re looking to add it to your routine. Your skin type and concerns will determine if tretinoin is right for you. If you’re looking to address fine lines, dark spots, severe acne outbreaks (including cystic acne), and skin texture concerns, tretinoin might be an effective treatment.

To be a good candidate, you also have to have really resilient skin. This means pretty much no sensitivity at all. Most experts recommend starting with an OTC retinol to see how your skin reacts. Tretinoin doesn’t have to be your first choice. Starting with milder retinol might address your concerns. It’s also better suited for people with indented acne scars, severe melasma, or hyperpigmentation. Or, if you’re over 35 and looking to reverse sun damage and signs of aging, tretinoin might be a good option.

As a stronger retinoid, tretinoin is probably not right for anyone who has any degree of sensitive skin. A history of eczema, rosacea, or frequently irritated skin also points to a delicate skin barrier, which tretinoin could compromise further. It’s also probably best to skip using any vitamin A if you’re pregnant, just to be cautious. As in all cases, consult your doctor to find out if tretinoin could be right for you.

Is tretinoin safe to use?

When used properly, tretinoin is perfectly safe. However, due to its potency, users might experience dryness and increased sensitivity to sunlight when they start using tretinoin. To combat this, be sure to up your moisturizing routine and sun protection. It’s also best to start slowly, using tretinoin a few nights a week, then upping your frequency as your skin adjusts. Tretinoin should also not be used excessively or with other actives like acids. This could damage your moisture barrier.

What is the “purge”?

Unfortunately, for many users, the notorious tretinoin purge is real. But it’s not a sign to give up—actually, it’s the opposite! Going through the purge means your skin is adjusting to the treatment and learning how to repair itself.

The first few times you apply tretinoin, your skin is going through more rapid cell turnover than it’s used to. This means all the acne-causing irritants and bacteria are pushed to the surface faster. This leads to inflammation, which causes breakouts. Even if you aren’t using tretinoin to treat breakouts, the resurfacing process might bring latent bacteria to the head, meaning those seeking anti-aging effects might experience the purge, too.

How to Reduce the Purge and Tretinoin Sensitivity

Though there’s not much you can do to stop the purge, resist the temptation to be harsh with your skin. This will only irritate your skin further at such a volatile time. Instead, be as gentle as possible.

Starting slowly with your tretinoin use might reduce the intensity of your purge. If you experience excessive inflammation, you might want to scale down to less frequent use and only use a pea-sized amount. Some ingredients are helpful in soothing the effects of tretinoin, like niacinamide. Niacinamide is a great supplement to your routine because it helps calm irritation while bolstering the effects of your retinoid.

How to Use Tretinoin in Your Skincare Routine

Deciding whether or not to start tretinoin isn’t the only question. How do you implement tretinoin in your skincare routine? How should you use tretinoin for the best results? Many have asked, and the answer is surprisingly simple.

When you start tretinoin, your skin will be going through a lot, very fast. Be kind to your visage and do everything to make the transition as easy as possible. At the outset of your tretinoin journey, focus on ingredients that won’t strip your skin or cause further irritation. You can also add ingredients that work well alongside your prescription retinoid. And, of course, you’ll have to take your suncare even more seriously. Apply the medicine at night, then slather on sunscreen to protect your light-sensitive skin during the day. Eventually, you can reintroduce ingredients like acids back into your routine—but only when your skin is less sensitive.

If this sounds like you have to rebuild your whole routine, I’m not going to lie: you might. Here’s a guide to choosing tretinoin-friendly products to reinvent your skin routine.

The Best Tretinoin Products To Add to Your Skincare Routine

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Cleanser

A good cleanser will keep your skin clean without stripping it of natural oils. Be wary of ingredients like sulfates, perfumes, or alcohol in your cleaner. These will dry out your skin at a time when you need moisture the most. Opt for something gentle but effective that doesn’t contain acids. Also, make sure to cleanse gently with your fingertips. Scrubbing with a facial tool or even a washcloth might be too abrasive while on tretinoin.

Toner

Toning can prime your skin with extra hydration, but only if you choose the right one. Skip anything with alcohol, and instead opt for a hydrating and refreshing supplement to your routine. If you’re used to an acid toner, you’re going to have to retire it for a while on tretinoin. Either way, apply your toner, then wait for it to dry before applying tretinoin. You can also load your skin up with moisture during this step by using a gentle, hydrating essence.

Serums

To avoid overstimulating your skin while you start tretinoin, most experts suggest saving serums for the morning and using tretinoin at night. Good serums are those that complement the effects of your retinoid. Niacinamide helps soothe irritated skin and protect the skin barrier. Hydrating serums help keep your skin from excessive dryness. And finally, vitamin C serums help facilitate collagen production.

Moisturizer

Keeping your skin moisturized is one of the best ways to minimize the side effects of tretinoin, like irritation and dryness. Experts suggest using a stronger moisturizer when you start with tretinoin while being mindful of your skincare type. If you already suffer from dry skin, you’ll want to use a super-rich moisturizer. If you have oilier skin, you still want to step up your hydrationn game, but it doesn’t have to be as intense. Just make sure you choose products without synthetic fragrances to keep irritation at bay.

When starting out, apply moisturizer directly after applying tretinoin to minimize potential irritation. As your skin adjusts, you can leave tretinoin on for about 20 minutes before following up with a moisturizer.

Sunscreen

I cannot express the importance of always applying your sunscreen (liberally!). This is especially true on tretinoin. Retinoids increase your sensitivity to the sun, so any work your tretinoin is doing will immediately be compromised without adequate sun protection. Try clean mineral sunscreens to provide a physical shield between you and the sun. And be sure to reapply throughout the day!

Your Skin Needs a Fall Reset—Follow These 9 Steps to Get Back Your Glow https://camillestyles.com/beauty/fall-skin-reset/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/fall-skin-reset/#respond Thu, 07 Sep 2023 18:55:44 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=245336 Cool down, glow up.

The post Your Skin Needs a Fall Reset—Follow These 9 Steps to Get Back Your Glow appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
For me, fall starts with a feeling. A craving to get back into my healthy habits and daily routines, to be more productive again (in a non-toxic way), to take stock of my life and press reset. Because resets aren’t just reserved for the new year. It’s always a great time to check in with what is—and isn’t—serving you, and to return to the rituals that keep you grounded and inspired. That’s why I swear by doing a fall skin reset routine for looking and feeling my best.

Featured image from our interview with Mary Ralph Bradley by Michelle Nash.

What is a fall skin reset?

After getting a little lax with my skincare over the summer—vacation is vacation for a reason—I always dedicate the beginning of fall to a full skin reset. I’ll liken it to an everything shower. It’s the latest term for that long, steamy shower you take to do everything: a hair mask and scrub, shave and exfoliate, and finishing things off with a face mask.

A fall skin reset is like an everything shower for your face. It’s a much-needed answer to that craving for a clean slate. And while you can’t transform your skin completely overnight, you might be surprised what a dedicated reset routine can do.

Instead of sporadically throwing on a clay mask, a targeted reset ritual performed with quality (read: not stripping) products in the right order is like doing a facial in your own bathroom. And good news! You don’t need to feel bad if you can’t carve out the time for it every day—you’re not supposed to. Committing to a fall skin reset just once a week, or even every other week, might be all you need to detox your pores, slough off the rough summer living, and get glowing for fall.

How to Do a Fall Skin Reset

A fall skin reset focuses on two main goals: detoxing your skin to get all the bad stuff out and nourishing your skin to put good nutrients back in. You want to do your best to scrub away any damaged skin from the summer sun and UV exposure, while fortifying your skin barrier to prepare for the cooler months. But don’t overdo it! While a long spa-like treatment for your face is one thing, trying to hard to overcompensate with strong ingredients can backfire.

The Best Spa Treatments to Reset Your Skin

The easiest way to completely reset your skin for fall is to treat yourself to a facial. Your aesthetician is trained to strike the delicate balance between repair and reinvigoration. And there are countless peels, lasers, and tools to support any skin type and concern.

If you go the professional route, these are the best in-office skincare treatments for a fall skin reset.

Best treatment for hyperpigmentation: Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are a step above any acid serum you can apply at home. I’m a proponent of the bi-annual chemical peel—once in January to ring in the new year (new skin, new me I always say), and once in September to strip away the sins of summer.

Though the in-office process only takes a couple of swipes, the healing process is pretty extensive. For 7-10 days, your skin will literally peel off. Arrange your schedule accordingly.

Best treatment for uneven skin texture: Microneedling

Just as it sounds, microneedling involves a tool of tiny needles that puncture into your skin to stimulate cell repair and collagen production. It addresses texture concerns like fine lines and scarring. Right after a microneedling treatment, expect some redness and maybe some swelling. However, you can get back to your routine right away with minimal downtime.

Best treatment for redness: Intense pulsed light laser

This laser is the best solution for sun damage. Whether you’re targeting sun spots or redness from broken vessels or rosacea, this laser treatment sloughs off damaged skin with more targeted peeling than a full peel. But you still get those dramatic results.

The Ultimate At-Home Fall Skin Reset Routine

While I love the luxury of occasional professional treatments, they’re not the only way to get glowing, healthy skin for fall. These treatments are pricey—and they’re a nice-to-have, not a need-to-have. Especially when, with an hour or so dedicated to just your face, you can give yourself an at-home spa treatment that will leave you just as reinvigorated. Here’s how to make the magic happen for your skin, from the comfort of your home.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Step 1: Double Cleanse

Give a little extra oomph to the first step of your routine by trying double cleansing. A double cleansing ritual gets past the surface of your skin to deeply cleanse your pores. For your first step, choose an oil cleanser to help give back moisture to your skin and prevent drying it out.

DAMDAM Silk Rice Makeup-Removing Cleansing Oil

This silky, lightweight cleansing oil uses the J-Beauty secret of rice bran to purify the skin and fortify it with Vitamins B and E.

$35.94

Wonder Valley Oil Cleanser

The thick, honey-like consistency sets this olive oil-based cleanser apart. Filled with antioxidants and botanicals, it nourishes and deeply purifies the skin.

$65

CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser

This drugstore miracle is a lightweight oil cleanser that emulsifiers into a foaming texture to cleanse deep into your pores.

$12.99

Step 2: Exfoliating Treatment

Exfoliation is one of the best ways to see instant results. An exfoliating treatment can give you softer skin overnight—or even in minutes. AHAs work to refine dry, rough spots and BHAs clear out sebum from deep within your pores. Together, they create a fast-acting smoothing effect.

Over time, exfoliation also addresses skin texture and dark spots. But for the full reset feeling, try an exfoliating mask for baby-soft skin instantly after wiping it off. But use in moderation—too much of a good thing can deplete your skin barrier.

The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

This favorite from The Ordinary has amassed cult fans for a reason. It’s pretty strong, so use it sparingly.

$9.50

Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment

If you’re not into exfoliating masks, try adding this serum to your nightly routine. Lactic acid is a gentle AHA that is effective even on sensitive skin.

$85

Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment

This treatment combines the power of lactic acid with gentle physical exfoliation for a microdermabrasion-like treatment in two minutes.

$78

Step 3: Detox Mask

With your skin freshly smooth and your pores unclogged from exfoliation, it’s time for the next step: deep detox. Use a clay mask to soak up excess sebum and leave your skin feeling squeaky clean. But although there might be something satisfying about the kitchen-sink clay masks, look for a formula that also contains nourishing ingredients so you don’t leave your skin dry or irritated.

Blue Lagoon Silica Mud Mask

Made of silica from Iceland’s famous blue lagoons, this white clay mask gently draws out impurities. It also helps balance and refresh your skin for an instantly glowing complexion.

$45

Youth to the People Superclay Mask

Youth to the People is known for its superfood-enriched products. This combines gentle clays with clearing ingredients like kombucha, niacinamide, and gentle BHAs.

$38

Renee Rouleau Rapid Response Detox Mask

Celebrity facialist Renee Rouleau developed this mask to effectively address hormonal acne and blemish flare-ups. It’s a great way to detox and treat inflamed skin without causing further damage.

$68.50

Step 4: Hydrate

If you have drier skin, follow up your exfoliation with a hydrating mask in lieu of the detox mask. A fall skin reset also means preparing your skin for the cooling temperatures. The earlier you start drenching your skin with hydrating ingredients, the better.

Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask

This ultimate reset mask has been a cult favorite for years. Not just for jet lag, this mask is an instant facelift and wake-up call. It hydrates and nourishes with niacinamide, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and revitalizing antioxidants.

$49

COSRX Ultimate Nourishing Rice Overnight Spa Mask

Somewhere between a high-quality moisturizer and an overnight mask, this K-Beauty treatment is a surprisingly lightweight but powerful moisturizer. Slather it on as your last step for overnight hydration.

$18

LOOPS Beauty Dream Sleep Slugging Mask

Hydrogel masks are the new sheet masks. This slugging mask infuses your skin with intense hydration in just a 10-minute loop.

$35 for a set of 5 masks

Step 5: Fortify Your Skin Barrier

After piling on all those actives, you want to make sure you’re taking extra steps to help your skin barrier. Add barrier-boosting ingredients (think antioxidants, vitamins, ceramides, peptides, and anything hydrating) to your daily routine to keep your skin healthy and glowing through the fall and winter.

Tower 28 SOS (Save. Our. Skin) Daily Rescue Facial Spray

Forget what you know about face sprays. Whenever your skin is feeling irritated, this is the product you should turn to. Hypochlorous acid promotes wound healing and purifies the skin to soothe and prevent everything from breakouts to your skin barrier.

$28

Good Molecules Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Essence

An essence might be the perfect step to add to your fall routine to increase your skin health and boost hydration. If you have drier skin, consider an essence like this hyaluronic acid-rich formula that locks in moisture for visibly plumper skin and deeply penetrating hydration.

$14

Dr. Loretta Intense Replenishing Serum

This is one of my holy grail ingredients—especially when I’m trying to make up for a summer of skin damage. Use this every day for a week and watch your skin repair itself back to its glowy, healthy self.

$70

Step 6: Switch Up Your Serums

The changing of seasons is like the changing of the guard. I rotate out my summer serums—mostly geared toward preventing hyperpigmentation and giving me a summer glow—to fall/winter serums. During this season, I prioritize antioxidant-rich blends that focus on healing and treating damaged skin.

Superegg Vitamin Collective Vitality Elixir Serum

This treatment serum brings brightness and vitality to any skin type with a cocktail of vitamins and antioxidants. It’s like a multivitamin for your face.

$65

The Nue Co Skin FIlter Serum

This serum is a fall skin reset all in itself. It’s filled with a ton of transformative ingredients like bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, and AHAs.

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops

This TikTok-approved serum isn’t a Gen-Z favorite just because of its cute packaging (though, fine—that plays a big part). Niacinamide is pretty much a magic ingredient, especially when combined with hyaluronic acid and watermelon for bright, hydrated skin.

$35

Step 7: Go for a Thicker Moisturizer

Another must to prepare your skin for the upcoming cold front is switching out your moisturizer for a more heavy duty formula. Whatever your skin type, add a thicker moisturizer than you use in the summer for soft skin all season long.

Dieux Skin Intsant Angel

The name of this product is no exaggeration. With ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, urea, and squalene, no wonder it gives you instantly soft skin.

$78

Embrolysse Lait Crème Concentré

This French skincare moisturizer is a multi-use holy grail. It’s not just a moisturizer, it’s a mask, primer, cleansing milk, aftershave, and even an after-sun balm.

$29

EADEM Cloud Cushion Moisturizer

For a moisturizer and treatment cream in one, this cushiony mid-weight moisturizer also addresses dark spots, dryness, and dullness.

$58

Step 8: Seal the Deal with a Face Oil

The final step in your skincare routine should be a facial oil. It seals in everything that come before it with an occlusive layer to locks it all in. Don’t worry, any skin type can benefit from a face oil, so long as you choose the right one. And with winter coming, this could be the key to glowy skin all year round.

Kiehls Midnight Recovery Concentrate Moisturizing Face Oil

Like an overnight eraser for blemishes. Made with evening primrose oil and a blend of antioxidant-rich botanicals, this nighttime serum gives you a clean slate when you wake up.

$22.50 (reg. $30)

Ranavat Brightening Saffron Serum

Ayurvedic rituals are finally getting the recognition they deserve and this saffron-infused facial oil is a silky, glowy solution to any skin woe.

Meet the Experts

Alison Carroll, co-founder of Wonder Valley, has made olive oil the star of your tablescape and skincare routine. Wonder Valley does it all, developing olive oil-infused skincare and producing our go-to olive oil for any and every recipe. “Extra-virgin grade olive oil has endless benefits and uses for skin care and really is one of the oldest beauty ingredients,” she says.

I also spoke with Lena Philippou Korres, founder of the Greek beauty skincare brand, Korres. Korres harnesses natural ingredients bountiful on the Grecian islands, like Greek yogurt and olive oil, to create lush, effective skincare with a modern take on ancient rituals. “Anyone can use a product containing olive oil or its derivatives and enjoy multiple skin benefits,” says Korres.

Ahead, our experts offer insights into how to use olive oil for skin. Get ready—you’re about to take this underrated beauty secret way more seriously.

The Benefits of Olive Oil for Skin

Of course, olive oil isn’t the only pantry staple known to make a skin-brightening impact. From probiotics to collagen, what’s good for your gut is usually good for your face. And fun fact: olive oil is an ancient beauty trick. With a history that can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome, using olive oil for skin care isn’t anything new. (People literally bathed in olive oil to reap its moisturizing properties. I’d call that an ideal self-care ritual.)

But what makes olive oil so versatile is its laundry list of beneficial beauty ingredients. Korres lists them off:

 • High concentration of essential fatty acids. This includes linoleic acid, oleic acid, and squalene (a skin-strengthener) with “excellent emollient, nourishing, and antioxidant properties.”
 • Skin-compatible. Olive oil’s composition mimics our skin’s natural oils.
 • Natural source of vitamins. Including A, D, K, and E.

Carroll expands on this, noting olive oil’s potent polyphenols (antioxidant) content. “Antioxidants fight free radicals caused by pollutants, environmental toxins, and sun damage. These can have a premature aging effect on the skin, particularly its elasticity.”

Olive Oil Skin Side Effects

Though olive oil can have many benefits, picking the right formulas is crucial. You shouldn’t raid your pantry for a DIY treatment, for example. Olive oil “is a heavier oil,” says Carroll, “which can clog pores if used directly onto your face or not balanced with other, more linoleic oils like sea buckthorn or rosehip.”

Korres adds: “Despite the superior beneficial effects of olive oil, there are controversial opinions about its effects on the skin with an epidermal barrier dysfunction such as atopy-prone skin or immature, newborn skin. Therefore, olive oil is not recommended for atopy-prone skin types or baby products due to its high content of actives.”

Tips for Use

The good news is, you can use this multi-tasking ingredient everywhere. “Olive oil is literally a skin-compatible multi-tasker,” says Korres. “It moisturizes and deeply nourishes the skin, while also improving elasticity. Even oily skin types can benefit from olive oil as long as the formula is balanced for their skin type.”

The Best Olive Oil for Skin

“Olive oil is a universally beneficial ingredient that helps repair, hydrate, and soften skin. My favorite way is using it in [Wonder Valley’s] Oil Cleanser,” says Carroll. “Oil cleansing is a great alternative to using a face wash. It removes all the build-up, excess oils, makeup, sweat, and SPF without disrupting sensitive and hardworking microbiomes or our skin’s pH.”

Singing the product’s praises, she says: “Our Oil Cleanser has a gorgeous, thicker texture like honey that has the added benefits of boosting circulation and promoting lymphatic draining if you spend a few minutes massaging it in. When it comes in contact with water, it transforms from honey to a milky consistency and washes all those impurities away. This results in a soft, clean, balanced complexion.”

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Best Olive Oil Cleanser: Wonder Valley Oil Cleanser

Taking Carroll’s directions, I added the Wonder Valley Oil Cleanser to the first step of my routine. She was right, the texture was like no other oil cleanser or balm I have ever tried. The consistency was somewhere between the two—both fluid but thick and substantial—unlike other runny or more viscous formulas.

Applying it felt luxurious. I have begun using this when my skin is irritated and stressed. It instantly calms my skin and bathes it in a relaxing film with an almost-cooling effect. I also enjoy using it when my skin is extra grimy with sweat and SPF after a long summer day outside. Unlike other oil cleansers, I feel like this thick texture can handle it and effectively eliminate the day’s impurities.

Washing it off is satisfying too, as it turns into a milky consistency. I like to follow up with a foaming cleanser to make sure any excess oil comes off. Alternatively, I pair it with the Olive & Lotus Exfoliant, a powder cleanser that’s activated in water. This gentle exfoliant foams and instantly clears any residue that might be left on my face.

Afterward, I am left with softer, calmer skin. This cleanser is now a double-cleanse staple for me and a treat for the senses.
